  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
46' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1974 - 1981)
About installing them, use of KN filters or not, problems that occured when you installed them, ease of installation, do they have good instructions included, what other stuff I will need (amount of hose, clamps, fittings, etc...)
Good place to buy online, etc....

I have 8v71TI's and I think I need the 6000 series.

Thanks in advance,

Captned: make a search of this forum and you'll find quite a fiew postings.
several years ago I installed the CCV6000 system on Lady Ntina powered by twin DD8V71TI and I'm happy with it.

One thing ,recommended by Racor, you should NOT do is to return the oil/water crap from the CCV filter canister to the engine crancase. Pipe it as I did to separate container and empty the container once a year or as needed.

The best price I found was from LI Detroit Diesel but shop around. Racor has good detail instructions and supply every thing you need for installation. Installation is staight forward.

I bought mine from Arctic Marine a couple of years ago. They had the best price online. I didn't buy the installation kit. Instead, I went to my local hose shop and purchased fuel rated hose. It was not real easy to work with as it had wire in it, but I saved money over buying the kit. I also purchased the K&N filters. This is cheaper than the Racor filters, but it also requires more work. I had to buy fittings for the hose and install one into one of the K&Ns for each engine. I drilled a hole in the end of the filter to accommodate the fitting and then put some 5200 around the outside of it to hold it in place. It all worked out fine, but in hindsight I wonder if it would have been better to just buy everything needed from Racor. Their filter housings are metal and you wouldn't have to worry about them cracking apart if someone leans on filter. I already had to repair one of my K&Ns that started to crack right next to the hose clamp that holds it onto the turbo.

If you have any more questions, I'd be glad to give you my 2 cents. It was not a hard job to make up the hoses and fittings, but I think the extra cost of buying everything from Racor would have been worth it.

Oh, and I didn't run the drain from the CCV back into the oil pan. Instead, I installed a short length of hose and a little ball valve on the end. To drain it, I just put a paper cup under the hose and open the valve.

Very easy installation, the hardest part is deciding where to hang the canister. I don't recall exactly how much hose but I think it was around 25'. I have 8-92TI. Counting the filters, hoses and clamps less than $900.00. Figure on about 5hrs for install. I have a convertible w/out stand up engine room so it might go quicker in a MY with better access. Also as stated above DO NOT route the drain to the engine, run it into a crap can.

Thanks for the insight Gents... Always welcome more.... Sounds like I should buy everything from Racor....

Hey Sky,

How often do you have to drain it?

Chris, where did you hang the cannister?

Ned,
I have tried to drain it every time I fueled for the last year. After 3 fuelings, I was concerned that nothing came out, so I opened the cannister. The filter was covered with oil, but nothing more than some residue in the bottom of the housing. I assumed that it was working okay at that point, so I haven't opened it since. I guess after the filter is saturated, it will start to accumulate in the lower housing and then you can drain it.

I have the 53C and the engines are only about 14" below the floor. There is angle iron supporting the floor and I bolted the plywood brackets to them. I don't think this wood apply in a MY. I recall seeing in another post a while back some pictures of the system installed in a MY, but I'm not good on finding old posts. Sky do you remember that post?

Thanks guys,

Chris, I have a 46 convertible with maybe 8" of clearance. I guess I will have to wait and get the Racors before I figure out a place. Probably be outboard of the engines.... Would be nice to have them inboard for ease of service, but it doesnt sound like I will have to mess with them much....

Cheers,

You should be all right to hang them, but hang them outboard of the engines, they really don't need any servicing. I have probably 150hrs on them and NO oil to drain yet. Put them on the outside and every month or so when you crawl around to check the batteries look at the canister.

Here's the original thread where MikeP posted the pictures of his installation. Unfortunately, the pictures are gone now. I hate that. Why can't this site either increase the photo space available or do away with it all together? If they didn't host any photos, it would force people to use photobucket or some other hosting service and we wouldn't lose all of those pictures. Sorry of the rant. I just get frustrated when I want to look up some old thread and it has no real significance because the pictures are gone.

Ned,

I used the CCV6000 and also installed K&Ns in place of the metal cans. Here are a couple of photos of my installation. Of course, I got advice from, and copied my good friend Mike P's installation.

I put the CCV6000 system on my 45C's 6V92TAs when I owned it.

Mounted the cannisters on the forward bulkhead, with a drain hose and ball valve on the bottom so I could drain into a cup. I recommend NOT draining back to the crankcase under any circumstances.

I also bought their air filter housings, although if you have Airseps, you could use those. I wanted larger-surface-area air filters at the same time.

Installation was an easy one-afternoon job.

Ned,

For some reason, my photos didn't get posted on this thread..guess I am not "senior" enough. If you go to my sight in the Owner's Gallery I have posted a few photos of the RACOR installation there.

I just ordered two from filterdepot.com. They are not on the website, but I emailed them and they said they had them. $302 bucks each and $10 shipping. Thanks for the help. I will update when I install.
