Thinking of taking the bride on a nice getaway for our 27th anniversary... Anyone have experience/recommendations in Bora Bora ?

Spent a month in Bora Bora when we were cruising on our sailboat. There is a very famous restaurant where all the stars go called Bloody Mary's it is a must, very expensive but lots of fun. There was a nice hotel near there with a great outdoor bar, unfortunately we can not remember the name of it. Also across the lagoon are the over the water rooms at About $700.00 a night, very nice. Take some boat tours while you are there, lots of great things to see. John

The over the water hotel is called Le Meridian, John

My wife caroline and I were in Bora Bora back in 1990 and 1991 for a few weeks each time. This was before children and we were backpacking young married professionals. At that time it was increadably beautiful and very quiet. Since then it appears to have expanded its tourism industry significantly. Go but take a lot of greenbacks. It was one of the most expensive places to visit we went to. If you want to keep an eye on your expenses I would suggest that you check out the back packers guides. You don't have to stay where they recommend but those backpackers know how to find the best deal for the dollar. If money is no object then ignore this advice. Besides Boars Bora we spent a few weeks on the Yasawa island group (Tavewa island) in Fiji. Although not quite as spectacular as Bora Bora it was very beautiful and reasonable. The native Fijians are some of the most friendly people you will ever meet. It would be a very good second choice if you want to get a great cultural and south pacific island experience on a budget.

We stayed at Sofitel Bora Bora for a week back in 1995. It was a blast. But hopefully they have upgraded the rental dinks. Way small. The outrigger ride around the island with a 25hp diesel and a cinder block for an anchor was a hoot. Good food, great people at the hotel, and all around a terrific experience. We enjoyed this more than Moorea. Get the over water bungalo and bring back the extra bread from the dinner table.

And if you like SPAM they have a diverse variety in the local convenient store nearby. There was a pizza place near there as well as I recall. Take the dink out to the moto's and hang out. Walk around. Step on baby sharks in the shallows.

Having been to Hawaii recently, I would rate this much higher. The poly parties were much smaller. None of the mass produced crap you get in Hawaii.
