  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
50' CONV -Series I (1966 - 1969)
So normally I haul the boat every 12-18 months. I've always used the same paint Hatt used when she left the factory 48 years ago. Never had a hard shell barnacles on the hull even when I went 3 years after the 04 hurricanes this is after 3 months. They did give me free paint and a few excuses.

Seems the replacement stuff had a half inch of sludge that wouldn't shake up

Interesting 38 Bertram- looks like it has Zeus pod drives?

Which paint failed? If I follow this, it looks like they didn't fully mix it before they put it on your boat.

I have had very good luck with Seahawk up here, but your fouling conditions may be different down there.

Interesting Bert. Not Zues pods, those are the Volvo IPS. wheels are in front.

Right. I missed that first time around. Any performance information on that setup? Someone went to a lot of trouble to do that.

I don't see what all the fuss is about, your bottom looked great. Just think if you would've waited any longer you could've went reef fishing without having to leave the dock. lol. Sweet looking Bertram by the way, your buddy put some serious money into that refit. Beautiful boat though, I bet it gets second looks everywhere he goes. I love to see older boat all redone.

Tony

What was the reason for the paint failure? That's a lot of growth for three months even if the paint job was older. Looks like the paint did nothing. That is a great looking Bert and the Hatt looks pretty darn nice with her fresh bottom. Is that the Bert that was refit in the Tampa area?

Tommy and I have a lot of history with that boat and its former owner going back to when we were kids on the Jersey shore. The boat was bought new by a mutual mentor and was passed on to Tommy a few years back. Tommy had the diesel shop at crackerboys Ft Pierce and became a rep for Volvo after a bad auto accident. The engines and drives were installed by himself at crackerboys. They have been in there quite some time now and still look good. There have been several articles and write ups on the boat. The performance and economy is incredible.

Hey rsmith
You're forgetting about the increased water temps this year. All Summer we were running 1.5-2 degrees above normal. Increased "horrible water" lake releases have just added to your woes. What you are using now is no longer effective down here.

Ok I'll take your word for that it has nothing to do with the fact that the biocides and copper is separating from the main paint body and won't remix and rewed correctly. Where did you get your chemical engineering degree from again? DIGIORNO?

Interlux and Pettit both had issues with components and manufacturing. We were the lucky recipients of some of those bad batches. The manufacturers did the right thing with new paint. Hope you get the good stuff this time Mr smith.

I'm sure pizza the Hutt means well. Pizza remember it better to remain quiet and appear ignorant than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

Global warming caused your fouling problem. Pay Al Gore.

A friend of mine had the same issue with Pettit. Bottom was covered after 3-4 months. This was on a boat that was being cruised regularly. Had a boat up here with the same problem but only on one side. Owner painted the boat and said he used a fresh can of paint on the one side. Same brand and type of paint so the only difference would have been the batch.

Wow Boatsb. Did you take some nasty pills this morning? I'm just saying that increased water temps MAY BE a contributing factor to the whole bottom paint issue in South Florida waters. Might I suggest you move 4:20 to about 9AM?

I too had a similar lousy experience with Pettit Unipoxy PLUS. PIZZAZ had significant barnacle growth within 90 days on 2 occasions. Pettit even paid for the paint on the second try. The product failed miserably again. I gave up and switched to Micron. Even the Micron had reduced effectiveness within 8 months, but way better.

I recently ran into a guy who suggested I try mixing Cayenne Pepper into the paint. Apparently barnacles don't like it. I haven't tried that one yet.

Just to offer another possibility, the pic of the barnacle encrusted hull also shows barnacle encrusted props and shafts, which also have been painted. I have never had paint stay on my props or shafts because I run my boat often. I also don't get nearly as many barnacles on my boat as the folks nearby me on my dock who don't run their boats often.

Don't get me wrong, it may very well be the paint, but I'm betting that if you took the old girl out for a good cruise once a week, you'd have less of a problem.

See, I thought the same thing. I was dead sure that P-Daddy was making a crack along those lines,... then he defended it. :p
