  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
52' CONVERTIBLE (1983 - 1990)
I have found myself trying to compare a couple of boats and I was given some good advice here to look at each boat as sum of it's individual systems and the condition of those items. So here is my question, I am looking for the replacement costs of some of these items to put a ballpark figure on them? If you can throw out a number on any and or all, Thanks.

I am looking at 45-52C's

Installed Hydraulic Bow mounted Davit/Crane?

Installed Fixed Fiberglass swim platform?

Installed Hydraulic Swim platform with Dingy and or PWC chocks?

Installed Satellite TV system?

Installed Fresh Radar?

Installed Fresh Nav System?

Installed Updates Heads?

Installed Updated counters and appliances in Galley?

Installed Fresh Carpet?

Installed Updated Washer and Dryer?

Additionally if you recently have a cost on a repair or upgrade throw it out there?

I purposely didn't open the repower can of worms.

Most of the stuff in your list is peanuts. I would be surprised if many of these boats needed a sat system, since wifi/cellular/streaming is so readily available now, in the ranges they cruise. I don't recall seeing a boat without a swim platform, so I guess you are saying hydraulic versus fixed, which depends on the boat. Same thing goes for whether the dingy is on the back or the bow. Everything else on the list is small potatoes.

You cannot make decisions based on your superficial list, unless you have surveyed the following...

Hull - Any and all leaks, top and bottom
Engines - Hours, condition, smoke, controls, gauges
Generator - Age, Hours, condition, smoke
HVAC - Age, condition, performance
Plumbing - Heads, Showers, Pump(s), Sump Pumps, Bilge Pumps
Interior - Floors, walls, Lighting, Windows, Doors, etc.

After all that, then maybe a couple items on your list are important...

Davit/Dingy
Hydraulic Swim Platform (if you have any use of one)

And some would say stabilizers around this point as well.

Then comes carpet, appliances, electronics, etc.

JMO, so all other things being equal that you listed, you think that the things I listed do not add or take away any value?

It is hard to say without specific examples of boats. It isn't like buying a brand new boat and each extra adds to the price. But to answer your question, yes, if the two boats are the same, but one has your list of items, then it would add to the price. But not as much as you might think.

For example, if a boat had a davit/dinghy, it might add $5k, but new, a davit/dinghy will cost $15k or more.

Why does it not add $15k? Because people would rather do without than add that much $ to the price, and thus, the seller must add only $5k.

And when you talk about the whole list, it might add $20k, even though priced out new, the list is more like $50k. And it might not add much of anything, but make the boat more sellable.

What will really add to the price is the shape of all the big stuff and how well they are maintained. Add your stuff to that and that would be icing.

What I did when I was shopping is first know what I was willing to start with. I absolutely did not want to have to rebuild engines. Too freaking expensive where they sit. If they were sitting on a stand in my garage, it would be awesome to rebuild them.:) I also didn't want to have to replace the genset, but that was not as important as the engines. Finally, I wanted the hull to be dry, or at least as dry as possible. I also knew about the expense with replacing the AC, so good AC was on my list. What wasn't on my list, but should have been, is all the plumbing and pumps. Fortunately mine in good shape. I did get a davit, but I was prepared to not get one as well. I added the dinghy. I did not care about electronics because so many of the boats had ancient stuff and I figured that was something I would have to add. Furnishings was also low on my list since I figured I would probably do my own thing anyways. Originality with respect to the interior wood was high on my list.

If you are looking at convertibles, I would expect that cockpit modifications might be on the list. I have a MY.

You have to compare boat to boat to boat and just weigh everything. Also depends on what you want to spend.

Ever been to a heavy equipment auction? The smell of fresh paint and shine of Armor All’d hoses is everywhere. New electronics, etc. up top is kinda the fresh paint on a dozer needing new tracks. Brokers try to play that game. The reality is there are as many, or more, debits as there are credits.

Might make it sell faster, but does not add real value IMHO
