I can't seem to figure out how to do a link. Sooo, google MYEVERETTNEWS.COM. Just really good stills of this sat fire and how ugly burnt boats can be. I was on my boat about 5 docks inbd when I smelled an acrid odor, like elec wiring burning. I popped an ER hatch instinctivly. I then notice a faint wisk of smoke seaward. 30 secs later, I see a cop at that police boat which is moored accross from me about 70'. I yelled "Hey police, Hey police, Hey police, I think there may be a fire! He finally says "I got it" only a little irritated. He unlocks the boat and in about 5 minutes 2 other cops join him. They back out of one of these drive on drive off plastic dock things and are underways within a minute. They have about 1/4 mile to travel, and yes they did not respect the no-wake zone! Within another 5 min, the smoke is just billowing- eventually visible miles away. I am about 30 degrees off the prevailing wind, but the acrid smell is still impressive. Was a 2 alarm fire, 5 boats totalled, 3/4 sunk. The initiating boat was coming into berth and perpendicular to slip. The boom/fire happened so fast, the owner (I assume) said "everyone off the boat. NOW!. Only place to go was in the drink. 5 folks, everyone ok-just wet. No one to hospital.
looks to me like the remote control monitor on the people's police boat was effective. Many lookee-loos because about 5 eateries right there (and myself, of course.). Damn, a little berg like Everett sure has a lot of equipment in the FD! Had to be about 15 big trucks, 5 aid cars and 50-100 firemen.
A lady who was a close witness said she heard an engine stall, and the muffled boom on restart attempt.
Always wondered why this big a public marina had no fireboat until this police boat- a gift from DOHS. Could be that the $3.67/gal price at the fuel dock just isn't enough.
