The purpose of insurance is that you are made whole. This does not necessarily mean getting paid. As Scott said, if they think it can be done for less than your estimate, then they should provide the contractor to do it. Tell them that you don't want a check, you just want the boat fixed.

I couldn't agree more. If you accept a check and then get the work done I'd think you'd have minimized any chance of getting a supplement to the original payment. Tell them to handle the repair and you want your boat back to the condition it was in prior to the damage. All you should have to do is pay your deductible.

I would demand that I get a warranty that the paint will not turn color after a few years. I have always felt that if someone bangs up one hull side, I would demand that the whole side be painted.

Looks like BUS has really gone down hill since Berkshire Hathaway bought BUS.
I have been told by yards that BUS is totally different since the sale and now look for ways out. Now if a thru hull fails they claim lack of maintenence and deny coverage due to the corrosion clause.

Before they went above and beyond.

Update.....Boat U.S. sent in a second surveyor. I have also had experience with this surveyor when I managed Treadwell Bay. He can be a real hard head, however was a very knowledgeable person on older boats and wood boats. I guess I treated him well in the past and he treated me well in this situation. On Friday Boat U.S. contacted me and agreed to paint the whole side. They are not prorating the age of the paint but adjusted the estimate slightly down as the boat yard listed the boat at 44' not 40'. This I can live with. Still I will do the work myself. Being semi retired can control the perfect day to do the painting and make a tent on the side of the boat to protect from the elements. There will be a healthy balance left over that I will also invest in updates to the boat. Thanks again to all for the advice and comments.
