We just got back from Portland Maine where our son and his girlfriend live, he's captain of a commercial bluefin boat out of there.
Last week, after the seasonal quota closed we went out to try to catch a "short", a fish less than 72".
The details of his permit are complex, but after the season closes he is allowed to catch one fish too small to sell for personal use, and he has been dying to take me out fishing to show me what he does, so....
I caught three. The first one was 300 lbs. Too big, and we released it.
The second fish ran 600 lbs! Crap, we need a small one.
Third time's the charm, I caught one about 260, that one went home with us.
A couple days later we had a huge sushi feast..........yum!

You don't often hear about people throwing fish back because they're too big.

Sounds like a good trip. Pictures would be nice.

What happened to the Black marlin trip?

Pictures????
No pics, with only two of us on the boat I fought the fish and Dylan ran the boat. Superb fishing, the fish were chewing the paint off the boat. The sounder was epic with up to a dozen big ones on screen at a time in 213 ft water.

The Blue Marlin fishing was an Aug 2 thru Sept 22 Hawaii vacation, I fished six days on the Humdinger out of Kona.
The fishing was pretty dead, I only tagged two.
