Best packing for stuffing box

NonChalant1 had an informative post about using gore Tex for the shaft stuffing boxes. I have used it and I struggled with the break in procedure. Then I got to poking around in the internet and apparently packings that don’t allow dripping invite crevice corrosion in the shafts. I have my big Bahamas trip coming in a couple of weeks and don’t want to fight and worry about the packing and it getting hot on me. Sooo, does teflon packing do well with hi speed shafts and does it to have a difficult/time consuming break in procedure? If so what does the forum recommend for teflon breakin and/or just go with traditional flax (??) packing. Thanks for your time.

I personally avoid it for the shafts. The general consensus on this forum is to avoid it for the shafts. In my experience I was unable to manage the drip and it just made a big watery mess. I absolutely won't go back. However, the Duramax / Gore Tex stuff seems to hold up well on the rudder boxes pretty well.

Do you mean avoid the teflon as well as the gore Tex? Thanks

They are all using the same plastic tech:

Teflon = Gore-Tex = PTFE
