Best Exhaust Hose Plug?

What would be "best" to plug an exhaust hose that is under the waterline? I know most people just stuff rags or a towel in there, but I would like something more substantial. The usual wood boat plugs do not come in a 5" diameter to my knowledge, which is the size I think I need. Short of cutting a tree down and whittling it down to size , does anyone have any suggestions?

Beach ball. Deflate it and stick it in then inflate to a snug fit.

a nerf football or deflated rubber football works well, it's a good shape

I cut plugs out of 3/4 plywood then clamp them in place. Very secure and durable.

Dodgeball. Cheap. Deflate, insert, inflate (NOT TOO HARD!) Its not going ANYWHERE. Make darn sure you remember to remove it before you start the engine again!

If you have fiberglass exhaust pipe flanges, an inflatable plug like talked about above...if you have metal flanges, look at Home Despot- the plumbing dep't has rubber covers with SS hose clamps in 4", 5", 6" sizes. I used those for years.

GREAT ideas, gentlemen! I think I will get the rubber covers with hose clamps from Home Depot to go on the outside of the hull and temporarily replace the exhaust flappers with those to seal it up. I think I'll still inflate a couple of dodge balls on the engine ends of the exhaust hoses for good measure!

I Have Oval Shaped Metal Exhaust Extensions. Nothing Worked Well Till I Tracked Down A Truck Tire Innertube, Cut Out Circles Of It, And Used Hose Clamps To Clamp Them Around The Pipes. A Perfect Seal.
