While in Mackinac Island over Labor Day, some real nice boats at the State Docks. Two very delicious Hatt 1510 53 footers, sitting side by side...stereo!
One boat was a 60' or so, not so old, Bertram sportfisher/convertible; at least she was in great shape. She looked big and fast. The owner looked to be in his late 60's early 70's. I asked what her power was, min 12v92's etc. He indicated that she had DD 16v92's!! I suspect she gets up on the step big time, maybe 40 knots?
I asked what were the biggest seas he had been caught in. He replied that on the maiden voyage, after he first bought her used a few years ago, when they brought her up Lk. MI, they encountered some very big seas. The USCG later said there were 13 footers. He said they were running hard and stuffed the bow bigtime into a 'rogue wave', but she shrugged it off. As you may notice, if you see one, that style has an 'upside down hull' shape just below the bridge, so waves coming aboard shouldn't be an issue.
Just a fun post about some glorious big boats.
