  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
40' DOUBLE CABIN-Series I (1986 - 1989)
Well there was a doosy of a thunderstorm that went thru Beaufort Sun nite. My diver called me to tell me that all hell broke loose as well as some boats at my marina. Finally got thru to the marina who said I didn't sustain any damage however their flagpole went down and their live bait storage bin ended up in the parking lot. Two boats, an 80 footer and a custom 70' trawler broke loose from the T and ended up in the marshes over 1/2 mile away. Winds were clocked at 97knts. There is a small airport right across the street and a hanger went down there. Approx 8 boats sustained some damage from rubbing against the pier or ea other. Others had canvass damage and I understand several rag boats that had roller furling no longer have any sails.

....and we were anchored out in Cape Lookout Bight for it! I got up about 3 AM as things started getting wild. We have a wireless wind gauge that transmit through the temperature module to a readout in the pilot house. Last reading I got was 60MPH then the thing went dead, and it got REALLY windy! So I believe the reports of 80 knots at the port and Harker's Island, don't think we got into the 90's , but I was just a little focused on my anchor holding.

Which it did, big time. I should have taken a picture of the track on the plotter. Crazy. Looked like a kid took a crayon and drew a big 200 degree crescent, then took a red pencil and scribbled in the open space.

My other focus was on the sail boats around me, most of which turned on their engines to hold position. At least one had dragged.

My ground tackle is an 88# Delta, connected to 3/8 BBB chain by a WASI Powerball swivel, with a two line 20 ft snubber bridle. Had around 150 feet or so out in 23 ft of water plus 7 feet to pulpit, or around 5-1 scope. Boat weighs 74,000 and was full of fuel and water. Not sure what would have happened without that bridle, by the way.

On top of it all was a wild electrical storm all around us. that went on for a half hour after the winds subsided to a more gentlemanly 30 knots or so. I didn't feel so hot about being on my boat, but would have been freaked being on one of the 10 sail boats in the harbor. No one got hit.

Our bimini came apart a bit. That Stamoid is tough stuff, it bent the most forward stainless steel bow like a boomerang before letting go its grip there; still entact over all. The hydraulic radar arch was tilted back a couple of inches. The weather sensor left behind its base and cable tie, the anemometer was stiil intact. A few of the sailboats had some sails and dodgers pretty torn up.

I now understand what people say about how horrid it is riding out a hurricane. 15 minutes of Category 1 winds were plenty for me. I kissed that Delta anchor when I weighed it a few hours later.

GOOD GOING !! George... Man, I bet that was a trip. We didnt have much here at Southport. I cant imagine being in a storm like that. Soon enough I guess I'll get the chance. I was thinnking about making a run up to Ocroke in the next few weeks. Hope the weather holds out, but buy it's Hot here.

George, might be a good thing you were anchored out, you being on the T pier. That where the big boats were at Towne Creek. I know you always double up when wind is predicted however no warning on this one. You know the trawler I was talking about, the big steel hulled baby. Looked at their mooring lines the other day and they looked very stout however the 80 moter yacht, I can't say the same thing about. Wind came from the west and the trawler was the furthest west with the 80 footer east of it so I'm not sure if the trawler let go and took the 80 footer with it or not. Was told the owner of the 80, who I understand lives aboard, was aboard and called the owner of Town Creek on the cell but at 3am there was nothing he could do to help. Just glad you made it thru with as little damage as you did. Hope Ann made it through without having to go to a shrink when you got back. Just kidding as I know you guys are seasoned!!!

Good going George ... wondered where you and Ann had decided to keep the boat this summer ... since I didn't hear from you about a relocating trip. Hi to Ann ... hope you guys have a great Fourth!

That-a-boy George. Way to hang in there. See all those discussions on anchoring paid off.

I believe the winds were very high!! My 43 DC, Taylor G, was tied up in the first slip inside the finger at Town Creek Marina. Made the mistake of leaving the boarding ladder attached when I left on Saturday afternoon. It was torn off and bent up, wheels lost, etc. Its now at Hancock and Grandsons, Hawker Island, being repaired. The center window at the helm station (the opening one) was not latched but the control rod was tightened down. So much wind that the control rod was torn out of the cabin top Thankful to have the damage under $1,000!

On the positive side, Broadus Rose had just installed new fiberglass framed windows in the salon. Sure was nice to see everything was dry after such a heavy rain. Mel Tucker

George & Mel,

Over here at Spooners Creek, we clocked around 60 mph. Our Hat just healed over a little... No damage report here. Sure did love watching the light show... It was like a constant strobe.... Good to hear that guy's had no more then minor damage...

Hey Mel, I'm the new guy in town on the maxum between the Hat36 and the Luers 43 looking at your stern on a diagonal. We live in New Bern and usually go out to the Cape as soon as we get on the boat. If we're down there for any time staying in the slip I'll stop over and introduce myself and the wife. Feel free to stop over if you see us, always have some cold beer in the fridge.

I may be heading to Spooner's creek in the next few weeks. Any insight would be helpful. We will probably stay there a while and use it as a jumping off point. How far to the beach by car? I have 4 and 6 year old boys so I need things for them to do when we aren't out on the boat. Thanks.

Jack, you've got to go to Cape Lookout on your way up!
