An exploding battery is not that uncommon issue with acid or wet cell batteries. If there is a low amount of water in the batter it creats a space to collect hydrogen gas. Then just needs an ignition source. I have had a few blow over the years in our heavy equipment and once in our Hat right before going our to watch the 4th of July fireworks. Checking fluid levels and refilling with distilled water can lessen the chance of the issue. Alo if your level is to low it will also damage the plates in your battery. I had one blow in my face on a bulldozer becasue of a loose terminal connecton. You can use baking soda but dillution by water is always a solution.
