  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' CONVERTIBLE-Series II (1991 - 1998)
Hey Guys,

What are yours thoughts regarding my original Dytek 40 amp battery charger.
  • JUST REPLACED MY TWO 8D'S WHICH WERE NEW 10/2020 1400CCA'S EACH , LASTED 3 YEARS AND ONE WENT BAD.
  • ALWAYS MAINTAINED ACID LEVEL WITH DISTILLED WATER (3 gal/yr)
  • USED THE BATTERY CONDIONER AS WELL PREVETING BUILD UP
  • CHANGED OVER TO 6 COMMERCIAL (cat uses as oem) A/C DELCO GROUP 31 LA, WITH 950 CCA EACH, NOW PROVIDING ME WITH 2850 CCA'S PER BANK, vs 1400 CCA'S
The original Dytek 40 amp charger I believe is probably the culprit to over charging and over gassing my 8D's. So I am contemplating replacing the original Dytek with the following:
  • HOUSE BANK VICTRON 40 AMP 12V 3 BANK CHARGER
  • STARTING BANK VICTRON 20 AMP 12V 3 BANK CHARGER
I ruled out pro mariner after reading above said posts. Sky has always been spot on, facilitating quality materials. See below for some pics, I had a new custom battery tray made of 3/16" aluminum, 4 coats of bed liner applieD, followed by 1/2" closed cell rubber liner, and placed between all 6 batteries. all laid on top of 5/8" closed cell foam underneath the aluminum tray.
I will post some pics after completing the project. Thank you for your time.

Best, Jackpot

Do you need two chargers? Why not charge both banks with one multi-bank charger?

I just installed a Victron Skylla IP65 to charge 2 banks.

Nice work on the battery box.

If you were using 3 gallons of water annually for a pair of 8D batteries, then they are definitely
being overcharged. If I were you, I'd disconnect the main battery load cable, and test with an
ammeter...you might have a steady drain to either an appliance [like a bilge pump] or possibly a
wire leaking due to worn insulation, moisture etc. With all loads off there should be NO current.

I installed two of them on a 43'. I'm not even sure why. I guess it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Looking good in there.

What paint did you use for the wood work?

I have been using Bilgekote gray for the bilges, and I like it, but I am having a hard time finding anything I like for the wood down there...

Thank you everyone for your input. Agreed, I will also install one victron IP65 70 amp via Scott here on the forum. I am trying to put together a plan on accessing the original Dytek charger and the 4/O cable wires…. Which are a son of a bi$#*…. To say the least, the 4/O wire is not flexible whatsoever, so I am going to try a hair dryer to heat up, Open to suggestions from all of you.Brett, I use a rust oleum oil based gloss white. I have found it to be superior to the bilge coats, with proper prep to remove any dirt & oils, as best as possible. I will take a pic of the can, as I have found it difficult to locate, I suspect due to the rules - Regs in the voc,s. I purchased several quarts, as the gallons are far cheaper, however you will be far ahead with the quart size staying good after several uses. Thanks again everyone, Jackpot
