I need to get some new batteries, and I called Sams. They have an 8v battery that some previous posts have mentioned, but it is much smaller than my current batteries in size, so i am assuming that it is not correct. I only need to replace the starboard bank, and it is for starting only. Will these batteries be enough to crank the 8v92's? They are for sure very inexpensive compared to what I have seen, but I dont know if they will work.

I crank on 8v golf cart batteries with no problem at all. They are small compared to what you're used to seeing and run about $70 to $80 each, if my memory serves me correctly. I also use them for my house bank.

a PO switched over to 8v golf cart batteries... plenty of power to crank the 8V71s

only $80 x 4 per bank... last sets lated 4 to 5 years

can't ask for more...

I replaced my 8D's with group 24's( 3 of them fit exactly into a 8D battery box) in Sept 2004 and they are still going strong.

And the best part is, they have required almost no water, less than a gal combined (thought I also replaced my battery charger at the same time.)

I went to local battery shop and paid $ 55 each.

Since I would like to run Optima or similar brand that is of the gel design, then it seems that the three Grp 24's in tandem would fit that requirement. Guess I need to obtain the dimensions of the Optima's high end outer case. Given the price of a new 8D (Interstate at 1400CCA) then the Optima's might only be a $100 or so higher for three.

8d interstates are under $150 if I remember right. Tod Howard added 8v195 interstates to his boat at about the same price each. Tod how are they working for you?

Just because you can does not mean you should. Golf cart batteries are not made the same as the big diesel starting batteries.
