Barnacle growth on Stbd Side Only

43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
A little over a month ago we painted the bottom with anti fouling and the running gear with zinc primer. Saturday I went under the boat. The port side props shafts and strut looked fine, the was no growth. However the stbd side gear was covered with growth. There were small barnacles as well as a kind crusty slime covering the stbd side props shafts and struts. Lilly Marie is moored stbd side to the dock and faces south in brackish waters.
The shore power is on the stbd side.
Any idea what would account for growth on only one side?

If your zincs aren't bonded well to the running gear, you won't get any growth. The side without growth may very well be the problem. Unless the water is very clear and shallow, sunlight shouldn't be a factor here. Is the hull the same on both sides?

LOL what did they put in your coffee this morning??? Maybe barnacles only grow in the afternoon sun.

What I was trying to say is, since the growth is only on the running gear, which most likely isn't getting any sun, sunlight should be a factor. I would expect it to be about the same on either side of the boat. If he was getting more growth on the hull sides, particularly the water line, then yes I would think sun exposure would be contributing to the growth. I guess if you have crystal clear, shallow water and a light sandy bottom in your slip, sunlight could be reflecting off the bottom and lighting up the running gear. Around here, the sun doesn't make it very deep in our murky waters at the dock.
 
in order for the prop coating to work, you need movement of props in peak growth times. spin your props once or twice a week during these times.

The hull is clean on both sides and the zincs seem to show similar erosion. The water is murky and since the boat is moored stbd side to, you would think the port side gets more sun.

The boat has been run every weekend and alway spinning both props.

I don't follow how a lack of bonding would prevent barnacle growth.

I am wondering if perhaps some electrical flow wore out the stbd side zinc primer .

If there is even the slightest stray current and no zinc protection, the barnacles will stay away.

We also get more growth on the side facing the dock. Could the proximity to the pilings be a factor? They are loaded with growth.

It ain't a plant!!! Sunlight and murky water have nothing to do with it. They eat plankton. If the flow provides more food source on one side than the other that's where they will grow. Ever seen a piling with more on one side than the other?
 
Is it possible that the can wasn't mixed properly and one side didn't get enough active ingredients? Did you do it yourself or was it done by the yard?
 
I know for a fact that's not true.

Until I connected my transom zinc to the bonding system it would grow stuff just like the rest of the boat. Now that it's connected nothing sticks to it.

Of course, that's probably because the zinc now erodes, so whatever tries to attach to it just goes away with the surface layer of zinc.

I used spray cans of Rustoleum Zinc Primer and shook them them for a few minutes as directed. I don't think it was a question of mixing. I had doubts that the zinc primer would work, but it worked very well on the port side. We went out today and I went under the boat. No new growth. I took a close look at the port running gear. No barnacles except next to the cutlass bearings where I put masking tape to keep paint from getting on the rubber bearings.
