  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
56' MOTOR YACHT (1981 - 1984)
While on the way to Marathon from Key West the other day, in rough head seas, the starboard tachs (pilot house and FB) stopped working. The synchronizer still synchronizes. I put a voltmeter on the electric sender attached to the Glendinning and indeed no AC voltage (I may never have figured that out but for the thread here a couple weeks ago: thanks Karl!). I did check the port sender to make sure I was measuring correctly.

Starboard is the slave on my set up. The sender is attached to a longish rod going into the synch. It has no part or mfr. markings on it.

Here are my questions:

Could there be another problem other than the sender itself; ie, the shafts driving it? What's the best way to test for that? Just use the port sender as a validator? (It will hard to get off due to access issue).

What is involved in pulling off and re-installing these things?

If it is the sender, what is the part and mfr # I am looking for? The tachs are Sun in the PH and no-name (OEM?) up top.

I can supply photos later if necessary.

Thanks in advance!

(I have a spate of little threads coming, let's tackle this one first).

The fact that the synch still works says the mechanical part of the sender is working. I do not know if there is a seperate sender for the electrical gauge(s) or it's part of the same sender for the synch. On my old boat the electrical tachs were driven from the alternators and the synch sender was totally seperate and purely mechanical....... Pat

Pat, these are electric senders that attach to the opposite side of the synchronizer from the corresponding tach drive cable from the engine.

The sender in question is the protuberance on the left with the two wires coming out of it, to the left of the red ring on the shaft, with black cable running behind it. The port sender is behind the red hose on the right and lower left hand corner of the plastic outlet box cover.

George, I have FlowScans with the electronic tachs. The cable for the synch comes out from the back of my 1271's just forward of the raw water pump from what looks like a normal Detroit mechanical tach drive sender unit . The electrical portion is connected to the top of the that on the engine . I 've never seen that type of sender on a synch before , I've only really messed with two. I looked in my Glendinning Manual and it doesn't show it either. Why don't you switch it (the sender) out with the other one and see if it works ? Maybe call Glendinning Marine products ,it looks original ,.....................Pat

unscrew the pulse generator and check the drive tang. It may be broken or rounded.

Dave, just called the extremely friendly and helpful folks at Glendinning and they said the same thing, explaining in detail. Turns out Ft. Lauderdale Speedometer and Compass has a solution as the
Sun senders are now obsolete.

Glendinning can also get you just the tang and key.

I am going to be right down the street from FLSC tomorrow afternoon, so that worked out great.

Sam's Marine has a pulse Genator for the old sun tachs.
Part number S27441A phone 800-678-9230

Thanks; I'll drive over there tomorrow, it is about 5 minutes from where we'll be; know it all too well!

FYI, Lauderdale Speedometer and Compass sells this unit for $85, as much as I like to support SAM's. Part #023-011-X. Apparently they do a good business in these, as the Sun is no longer available and the "tang" or drive shaft is prone to aging and failure. The Glendinning folks apparently have a supply of these shafts, if I heard the guy right; I went ahead and decided to replace the 27 year old original.

LSC is a nice and knowledgeable shop, BTW, first time I'd been in there.
