Just going through troubleshooting a similar issue.
Before launch this spring, I put portable battery charger on one of 8d's and charged,
when i reconnected battery to the bank the on board battery charger fan started running
(Note boat was not connected to the shore power)
The stbd. battery bank (qty 2 8D's) would heat up when onboard system was turned on,
Turned out one cell was bad on one battery and caused the charger to try to overcharge,
this in turn took out the other battery on the bank.

Getting ready to replace the stbd. bank with new batteries.

Question: Both banks are 24v, 2 12 volt in series. The charger is a 12 volt with (3) bank capacity
Each bank is on its own leg from the charger, is this correct that the 12 volt charger can work correctly?

If the charger is strictly 12 volt output and 3 banks then no because you only have the capacity to charge (3) 12 volt batteries with that setup . I am going thru this now what you need is a 4 bank 12 volt charger to do that or a two bank 24 volt charger .....Pat
