ASLAN Back to the Yard

How is $2 a ft (and it is more like $3) a month, cheaper than propspeed?

In Miami $2 is the going rate. That’s what I pay for both my boats and the boat I run.

We need hull cleaning monthly down here in Florida which comes to $1300 a year for a 53 footer. Prop speed will cost more than that and you still need the hull cleaned anyway...

As noted when running in shallow waters in the Bahamas, the propsleed get sandblasted...

Pascal, have you tried Pettit’s cheaper product Prop Cote? It appears to be zinc cold galvanizing and is priced accordingly.

No i haven’t. But since we need a monthly cleaning, I may as well have the diver clean the running gear and keep it bare.

Here is pic sent to me by my yard--not my boat. The Pettit Barnacle Barrier spray is on one blade after a month, and Glidecoat is on other blades after three months in local waters back in 2016. Picture is before pressure washing. The water here is very dirty.

I'm hauling Aslan on Monday and will be able to report on Pettit Barnacle Barrier after three months.

Question is how much was that boat used in the month that blade was coated and at what RPM..

I have seen some posts somewhere recently about people who have successfully used cold galvanizing spray on wheels, rudders and shafts. I think it may have been on hull truth. Worth a search I suppose. we just put the bottom paint on ours and it seems to work fine

What RPM? 0-10,000. Come on. One thing’s for sure. All four blades ran the same speed-I hope.

I cleaned my props, shafts, rudders and struts this spring and used rustoleum cold galvanize paint. I'm in fresh water so there will be no growth but I will be able to report on how well it stays on when I haul out for the winter. For me this has been a boating season with over fifty hours (no giggling please) forty five of those hours at 2100 rpm, 17.5 knots.

Thanks

Good for you, Walt, and not giggling. Some of us would love to get to fifty hours a season.

Ya think? :) my point is that paint may be fine at low RPM and for a just a few hours a months but will quickly erode after use especially at high speed.

Why not put a bag over the props in the water to prevent growth? Canvas, plastic, etc...something that will shred but I guess not pollute if you forget to remove it.

Not sure that will work. Maybe if they are heavy black plastic and keep the light out?

Mister Clarkson, good to see that you have hired a mechanic that can get to those hard to reach places. No more head stands.

Some newborns get a silver spoon or cup. Mine got a pink wrench. That’s spammer to you Scott in Sydney.

Spammer is what I constantly fight off here, like that prat that reposted my own post yesterday. Spanner is UK/OZ for wrench, or, more accurately, box or open-end. The baby is extremely cute btw.

This year I am trying the Pettit zinc prop coat with good dry time between types of paint with a topcoat foam roller applied of Pettit hydrocoat ECO on all my metals. Trim tabs struts shafts props etc. So far this has done better than some of my other attempts. I have not been able to afford propspeed but maybe one day.

Well, all done at the yard. They agreed the prep work on the running gear wasn't up to snuff. Two weeks from the last dive and the gear (except props) had beards and barnacles. The owner and his son personally did the work.

The props looked good. The Pettit Barnacle Barrier was doing its job after three months. But, it was wearing off on the edges--no surprises there. Still, the props were pretty clean.

I asked the yard to repack my starboard rudder post. I was pleasantly surprised when they comp'd it and continued to apologize for me having to bring the boat back. So, you can be certain that I really highly recommend Marine Propulsion, Inc., Rockville, SC.

Interesting place. Here's my neighbor. Beautiful 6-71.
