Anyone know an exceptional woodworker/refinisher?

  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
50' CONV -Series III (1990 - present)
Well, one that will travel?
I want to refinish the 50c interior which is a light maple. I'd like a few modifications (carpenter) but the biggest job will be refinishing everything the same shade as a medium cherry. Staining maple isn't as easy as one might think (blotches etc) & requires several steps. Not just sand, rub on/off stain & apply finish coats.
I'm sure there are some great guys who unfortunately are casualties of the current boat building market & I'd like to put them to work.
Pack up the tools, 8 hr drive to south eastern CT, stay on boat (or hotel), work for a couple of weeks & go.

Game plan: remove caddy corner full size refrige/freezer, install under counter drawer frige/freeze, install flat screen tv, build door for new cabinet behind tv, new drawer fronts & teak/holly flooring.

Would love to take the boat south but that's not happening right now.

Let me know if you have anyone in mind

Thanks! Dave

I know a master carpenter but he is in Miami

I know a guy, his name is Jimmy Martin. He is redoing my boat now. Excellant work! If you can wait a month, he will be finished with mine. His wife is also having a baby in a few weeks. But, after that, he might consider. If you are interested, send me email with contact information and I will put him in contact wtih you. He is good.

Do you have access to a wood working shop?

Would that happen to be Jimmy Martin from Stuart FL? Now that would be a small world!
As far as a woodworking shop, I have trim carpenters who work for me & could use their equipment. We could set up im my garage.
I also have a local cabinet makers supply shop as well as a supplier for all the wood/veneers etc.

Thanks
David

Doug from Lyme, CT. Exceptional cabinet maker. He did this built in hearth surround out of cherry at my house. Pictures don't do it justice.

I live in Raledigh NC i have a 2nd home in the small city of Harkers Island NC there is about 5 to7 carolina boat builders on the Island all have finish carpenders. I know you do not want to come here but you can use my slip for nothing big enough for a 55 and take your pick best i can do. Here you can look at their work these guys get from 15 to 30 dollars a hour depending on what you want. One is doing a new shearline just down the dock you can look at the work it is beautiful.
One more thought send a e mail to Roger wortherington at Jarret Bay there are a lot of this sort of people in Newbern NC who did this kind of work for hatteras who are not working he can share some names with you. (Roger worked for hatteras for along time. You can get Rogers number from this site he carries a cell phone from sames marine. Good luck TIM

Thanks everyone for the suggestions & Tim for the dock offer. I emailed Roger & will follow op with a phone call. That sounds like a good connection as I'm sure he knows people.
Thanks

Might try some of the guys in the South Jersey area. Many are out of work from Viking, Ocean, Post etc.
