Thought I would pass these pics and the process along on how I have made the base units for the helm chairs on Boss Lady.



The first step which is not seen here, is laying up the teak sections. I used West System epoxy and number 20 biscuits to join these planks. I wrapped the squares in saran wrap to keep the excess epoxy off my clamps .

The ran the dry squares through the planner to remove the squeeze out of epoxy.

Next I fastened the blanks to the table top, then marked the center, and using a jig , routed a perfect circle.

This next step was a bit more difficult. I had to take exact dead on measurements of the aluminum plate and cut a recess into the round blanks. After routing the initial cut out, I removed the jig and used the router by hand to clear out the remaining wood .

Basically building a bowl.

The quick release mount fits nicely into the new teak base.

Not tight, but no movement either.

Now when the new pedestals sit on the new base, the aluminum quick release is barely visible. I also made the teak a bit thicker to fit the slightly curved deck and also to have a nice reveal when the teak decking meets the base.

Another note about why I built the base as I did.

Notice that there is no endgrain showing on the base. This will ensure there is no checking of the wood a few years from now.

I can't cut a 2 x 4 with a laser guide, so Paul is in no jeopardy of losing his job, LOL. I can do some excellent things with stone and metals though. I can do wood carving as in sculptures, but cabinentry just seems to escape me, well for that matter, I don't do so good with framing either, but the art stuff I am pretty good at. LOL A man must know his limitations. At the rate we are going it looks like Paul and I will be in the old folks home together, just kidding, but the 2 weeks thing is now a joke around here, even my wife makes fun of us. I did tell Paul that if this boat is not ready to go by june then I was going to set it on fire and start over. I will save the excellent swim platform, and build a boat around it. LOL
