When anchoring do most owners use the capstan on the winch to take the strain

In theory always use a snubber. In reality unless you’re anchoring in severe conditions that galley maid windless is built like a brick shithouse and you almost certainly aren’t going to hurt that thing. I don’t use a snubber probably 2/3 times I anchor, if there is no wind or waves sufficient to need one then why go to the trouble. You can always add it if and when things pick up. They usually don’t. I know this is bad form, but it doesn’t hurt anything.

With no bowsprit I use all nylon anchor lines which handle seas well with their natural stretch. I used to leave them on the Ideal capstan but somewhere ran across a recommendation to cleat them off instead which I do now. Reason was to avoid bending the capstan shaft. I never have come close to this problem but this made some sense.

Years ago as a result of an unfortunate grounding incident which over strained my original 500 lb. pull Ideal's bearings I replaced it with a 1000 lb. model which is considerably more robust. Hope not to repeat that.

I tie off to a cleat that is mounted on my pulpit. Galley Maid instructions say not to leave on capstan when anchoring

We had some strong winds that caused our snubber to part, it must of had some bad chaffing. This caused the windlass clutch to slip chain out. I made a choke hitch on the chain the cleated it off.
