Has anyone with an original Hatteras analog antena using a new HDTV TV had any trouble getting receiption? Did you need the converter box. I was told if you had a new tv and an old antena you didn't need a converter box. Some areas have already switched over to HD in their broadcasting.

No experience with the Hatteras antenna, but yes, if you have a standard antenna and a TV with an ATSC digital tuner (virtually everything made in the past five years+), you are fine. The converter box just makes up the circuitry missing in an older TV to receive these signal. Your TV may require you to set it to ATSC in its menu.

Provided the existing antenna will receive both UHF and VHF, you should be good to go.

Most of the conversions to digital are moving from a VHF transmission frequency up to a UHF (higher than channel 13) transmission frequency. Ergo the need for a VHF/UHF capable antenna. However, you won't be able to judge by the displayed channel because they will display their old channel number on the digital display. E.g. channel 9 VHF analog transmitting on 9, is changing to UHF channel 40, but will still be displayed as channel 9.1 digital.

There is no such thing as a "HD Antenna". It's just a marketing tool. Any TV antenna can receive both the old analog and new HD signals. The issue is the TUNER. If your TV does not have a HD tuner built in, you need a converter box, no matter what kind of antenna you have.
