Has anyone looked at modifying the steep stairs on some of the older boats to reduce the riser height to be more like those in a house? We are having some issues with the steep risers, 11" in one case and have considered an alternative design like that shown here. http://www.arkestairs.com/karina.php

I have used these in manufacturing plants where access to elevated machinery was needed, and can see how the design concept would permit getting an extra riser or two into the available space to reduce the riser heights. I can also see a downside to these. Comments anyone?

PS the original design for the industrial stairs is known as a Lapaire Stair. And you can actually comfortably walk down these things facing away and be perfectly comfortable but you cant stop while having both feet on the same step.

Bob, where exactly are you suggesting these might be the right solution? I can see where these would be great to replace the ladder going down to a swim platform ( a project I have been threatening to resolve on my boat!). I have been on some Hatt LRCs where the curved stairs down to the staterooms/ER is pretty steep. They look like a neat idea, just trying to figure where to use them.

Flybridge access?

Actually we were thinking of replacing the three interior sets ofr stairs, sundeck to salon, salon to down galley (which has to lift for ER access) and salon to aft cabin. Only three or four steps each but they have the greater than standard risers and are a challange for my wife with her brusitus issues.

Swimplatform access also sounds like a great idea.
