It's the new "Y2K." People can make a lot of money by scaring folks into believing the unbelievable.
Sadly, I've learned as I've gotten older that one has to look at the aspect of "Who stands to make money on this" for virtually anything. ANY data can be manipulated to represent whatever someone wants represented...or misrepresented.
Here's an example from my own personal experience - sorry for prolonging this but I can't resist and it illustrates the point. Well known maker of ignition wires said his wires can add up to 25HP on a small block chevy and he provides the dyno chart to prove it. What he leaves out is the fact that they hunted around until they found a car with wires in poor shape so the engine was misfiring under full load and dynoed it. Put in their new wires and VIOLA, 25 more HP right there on the dyno. Yep, I personally did the dyno tests. They left out the part where ANY new wires would have done the same thing and the part where their wires would have done absolutely nothing if the oem wires on the car were in good condition.
They didn't LIE, exactly, they just left out some critical info... like the climate change folks want you to forget that the earth used to be a lot warmer and that much of what is now the US was under water. Because if everyone understands that, it becomes obvious that we weren't around to cause "global warming" before...just as we didn't cause the extinction of 90+% of all the creatures that have lived on the planet. These loons have an "agenda" to somehow convince everyone that the earth can be held in its present state forever. This, of course, is not possible, whether we're on the planet or not.
(I have a bejellion of similar stories re "performance parts" for cars.)
