Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
Need some advice here. I have a 80 model 43 DC I think with the original air horns located on the top deck benneth the mast. Two hons that run off a small 12 volt compressor. The horns cease to toot although air is coming through when the button is pushed to activate. I need a replacement and the easiest way. I did take the horns apart and there is a brass diaphram that appears could be the problem. Can you replace these or start over?

I unscrewed my trumpets and then removed three screws which held the front of the air chamber together and removed the multi-disc diafram. I cleaned them up with WD-40 and replaced everything as it was. The horns then were louder and sharper in tone. It appeared corrosion/dirt was the trouble? My horns are Buells, both the triples and the OEM duals. Maybe yours are similar?

Go the the second page of threads to "Air horns again" and you will see what I did.

There is NO COMPARISON to what you have/ I HAD and what I have now.

Will ... I'm sure that your air horns are the same as mine. It sounds like they are out of adjustment. If you unscrew one of the horns even a few turns it will stop "blowing" even though there is air coming out. I would suggest loosening the "set nuts" on each and screw the trumpets "in" until they just touch the diaphrams, then back off just slightly on each. Then as someone is pressing the button start turning one of the trumpets "out" until it blows, then the other. You will need to then adjust each slightly in or out to maximize the loudness and tone.

Will, mine did the same thing. Just clean them up. The diaphram needs cleaning real good. Reassemble and adjust with the tone screw. Like someone else said. They will work like new.
