  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' YACHT FISHERMAN (1970 - 1981)
Hello -

My question for the 53 MY and 58 YF crowd is for the covering/finish of these wetbars? I think I have the original cabinet judging by the shape and size, but a prior owner covered it with Formica or similar. Both the exterior and countertop. I'm ready to go after it and try to bring it back to a more classic marine look, as well as adding a dorm size fridge and possibly an ice maker to the front. My sink and all is in good shape when lifting up the top so I'll leave that alone.

When I lift off the Formica I don't think I'm going to find mahogany underneath, but who knows. Has anyone refinished or restored these?
How are they constructed, mahogany sheet over plywood?

Pics would help, and Wetbar1.webpWetbar2.webpWetbar3.webpthank you in advance.

I know the sides are stained and varnished. The prior owner on my boat painted them and painted the formica top with a black countertop finish that made it look similar to granite. This is the one that’s on the opposite side of my boat. I don’t have a picture of the bar in the refrigerator set up.

Mine is original to the boat. Sides and door are varnished and the countertop and bar area are white Formica, except for the underside of the lid which is varnished wood.

Mine is the same as RJM on my 1976 58 LRC with exception I have black formica as the countertop.

I have formica on many of my countertops which I believe to be original to my boat.

I think you're likely to find marine plywood underneath your formica.

There was marine ply under the Formica on our Yachtfish. I took it off sanded smooth and got mahogany veneer to go over the ply. Came out nice. Lots of glossy varnish later it’s pretty. I’ll see if I can take a pic next time I’m at the boat.

Thanks so far, more pics please.
And as for the STBD side cabinet under the flybridge stairs, are those original Hatteras cabinets too? If I add a fridge and ice maker to the wetbar, I could use the extra cabinet storage if I could find something to go under those stairs.

my 1972 yf had as described above, varnished sides, front and under side of the lid, the top was black formica and the inside under the lid was white formice. it was falling apart when i bought the boat so i gave it to a member on the forum and inatalled a white fiberglass cabinet, not sure of the brand as it was mounted in the cockpit when i bought her. i moved it to the upper deck. i dont think cabinets under the ladder were from hatteras, i made a fiberglass one to fit there, fridge facing the inside and storage facing the stbd side

My 1980 58 YF was done a little different. No formica, just the teak veneer that is on the rest of the boat, with a nice edge that keeps things from falling off. It is original as far as I know.

Redid ours several years ago. Didn’t put a frig in but have a cooler on the other side.

Are you looking for pictures of the inside of the wetbar? If so I can get some. Let me know.

Great info and pics, yes - the inside of the bar would be nice too. Thank you everyone, i really like the split bar top too!
