Advice on removing gear ( transmission) 1978 42 convertible

Helping a friend take out the gear on his 1978 42, SF. I have removed transmission before on my old 46 series 1. I have ( A frame ) set up and chain fall. Just curious how easily, or not does it come out of the hole. Comparatively is it the same type of job as my 46 ? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I have cummins 903's with capitol gears. When I removed my engine I had to tip the front quite a bit higher to get it out of the hole, it would not lift straight out.

You may want to lift the back of the engine high enough for the gear to clear the coupling and block the back of the engine against the hull. If you can get the shaft back far enough to get the gear uncoupled you may not have to lift the rear. The hatch should be big enough to come straight up with the gear. Don’t forget to brace the salon floor.

Is this all DIY or anybody there with experience?

Draining, disconnecting the umbilicals, unbolting, lifting, then moving up, out, aft(?), then off of the boat is serious work that requires equipment, deck reinforcements, maybe a fork lift and gallons of good luck (or liquid bravery).
Usually one person involved knows something about these things.

When you do have it ready for removal be careful it's not tilting to far down on the engine end as the clutch pack will slide down the shaft and fall off. I bolted a slat of plywood across the hell housing to secure it.
