Hatteras Model
53' CONVERTIBLE (1969 - 1980)
Hi All,
Thought I would enhance that beautiful curve on the side of my 53 Convertible. Also, in truth, the paint was getting very chipped and bubbled at the join with the deck so the teak hides it as well as looks good. At least thats my opinion. Let me know your thoughts. I will post more images as I progress.
Cheers.
Jasper

I love teak......as long as I'm not that guy who has to maintain it.

I agree to that... it's like a good single malt Scotch, you can't help having another tot in your glass even though you KNOW that in the morning it's gonna HURT!!!

Teak always looks good when it's properly maintained...... but I hate doing the maintenance.

If you fix the chipped, bubbled paint, you may have to do that once every, what, 10 or 20 years? How many times per year will you have to varnish the teak.....?

I'd just fix the paint...

It looks good but the piece you have going up the side looks almost like baseboard, maybe it's just the picture. If you left that piece off and made about a 2" wide cap for the end of the side were your clamps are it might look better but a lot more work. Good luck, Ray

Looks good but that walkway is pretty skinny already. Ever seen that seen from Jaws where Cheif Brody is going up to the bow of the Orca and almost falls off? I did the same thing on a freinds Paul Man. The teak gets slippy and their needs to be a strip along the outside edge to stop your foot when it starts to slide.

Jasper, think you're going move the paint issue (moisture causing bubbles which chip) from where it is now to above the new wood. How are you going to handle the coverboard/trim joint because it will be very hard to keep that joint together as there are a ton of forces pulling in different directions and also the wood expantion/contraction issue. Maybe the best thing might be to add a 3/8 to 1/2 inch fiberglass bump out to the side of the house that the CB can be caulked to. This way when the paint bubbles you can just touch up the bump out piece and blend it into the radius on top where it meets the house. just an idea because I've been fighting mine for 25 years. Next time I have to do coverboards I'm moving them back and glassing and painting about 3-4 feet of what is now teak. Also, way back when everytime I went to South Florida I would swing by Merritt's to see what projects the PO had going on. Your boat inspired many of the changes we made to ours.
