Actual LOA

My boat is a 1987 55C and my marina is now telling me that it is billing me for 60 because that is wqhat they think the LOA with pulpit actually is. Is this published somewhare? The LOA in the brochure says 55'8". Thanks

My LOA is 58'3", but remember, the pulpit was added on, as was the swim platform. The pulpit adds about 3 feet, and the swim platform is 4 feet (nice!). So, that makes the overall space I take up to be 65'. Yes, I'm a 58' boat.

My marina has a rule that you cannot stick out of a slip more than 5' beyond the pilings. So, here's what happens....although my original docmentation says I'm only 58', I need at least a 60' slip to stay within the rules. So, I pay for a 60' slip. Truthfully, I think my pilings are actually set at 65' because I don't stick out beyond them. If I did, I'm sure the marina would be charging me for 65 feet.

Also, often if you take a certain size slip, say you put your 55' boat in a 70' slip because there isn't another one available or you just like the view from that one better, well, then you pay for the 70' of "real estate" you're taking up. Afterall, they could sell that slip to a 75' boat. The marina will never short change itself.

For my diver....I tell him I'm 53 feet at the water line because that's what he's cleaning. I don't think I should pay him for the part of the bow that raises out over the water, nor for the pulpit, nor for the swim platform.

All of this seems fair to me.

Thanks Angela. My boat is a 55 and the LOA in spec says 55'8" - I don't know if that inlcudes the pulpit and I don't have a swim platform.

The pulpits, generally, are not part of the LOA since they are bolted on as an addition to the boat. They were not part of the "mold" and not all Hatts have them. If yours is a solid part of the hull (I've never seen a Hatt like that), then it would be a part of the LOA. The LOA is just the measurement of the hull itself as she was popped out of the mold.

You can get your real LOA as it is today by finding the true point of the bow under the pulpit and measuring to the end of the pulpit from that point. Add that back to your 55' 8". If you've got the same pulpit as most of the rest of us, then, you're probably right at the 59' mark.

See if you have the "Graving Plan" in your owners manual and schematics package. I have it for my boat and it gives all the different flavors of dimensions. I am away from the boat right now, but for my 56 Hatteras MY, they give a dimension with pulpit and platform of 61 feet and an inch or two. They also give the length without each or both of those as well.
You could call Hatteras if you don't have it, or Sam's may have it.

As I recall for my 55 convertible. 58 ft with pulpit and 2 feet for swim platform.

Hatteras boat "sizes", at least during the "classic" era were based on hull length and did NOT include the swim platform or pulpit. The 53 MY, for example, has a hull that is 53 feet long. The actual length of our 53MY, including the platform/Pulpit is 58 and some-odd inches which is shown in the original paperwork that came with the boat.

If the marina charges for "overall length" then the pulpit/platform is part of that measurement. But the marina's I have rented space in charged by the size of the slip, not the boat. If you rented a 60 ft slip you paid for that, regardless of whether or not you had a 36ft boat in it. Our 53 MY fits in the 60ft slips at Piney Narrows, as does the 58MY. Neither will fit in a smaller slip and the "price" for the slip is the same whether a 53 or 58 (or a 14ft Boston Whaler) occupies it.

coast guard rules for measurement...loa is the hull length, this does not include anything that is bolted on(swim platform, pulpit). if the pulpit or platform are an integral part of the hull(molded in with the hull)then the loa includes these items in the measurement. that said, the marina can and probably will charge for the overall length including these items, weather they are bolted or integral. most marinas in south mississippi charge the slip size for permanent slips, and by the foot for transient slips

Sounds like your in my Marina! These guys just sit around and try to figure out ways they can charge us more.. I'm 46 feet and I pay for a 50' slip minimum. Plus an extra $1 per foot per month because I'm on the inside of a T head... Plus an ..........Never mind.........Grr...
