  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
OK, So we have the original air handlers in the boat. They are loud, one fan motor just died. I was looking at some big replacements in the winter but just got a quote to replace all the Cruisair with non piston compressor modern domestic or CTM split units.

So that is 12-16k in units.

Flushing and pressure testing lines.
Replacing splits and compression is the same location.
Relocate only 1 thermostat so we don't have to run control lines to the aft salon.

How many hours is that?
I just got quote 20k plus about 15k equipment. 35K total.
4 compressors / 5 air handlers

Seems excessive.
Anyone still make a R22 air handler? Motor replacement x 2 isn't sounding so bad right now.

Time for new and that's a big change. Lots of labor. New hardware. $35k doesn't sound unreasonable.

The equipment sounds cheap to me: 5 air handlers and 4 compressors / condensers for $15k?

$20k labor on the other sounds high. That’s about 200 hours… figure 6 hours per air handler and condensers would be about 60’hours.

Something doesn’t add up

Estimated lumped gear and labor.

With 2 numbers. One for Domestic /CA one for that CTM (newer).
But the online price for CTM is 14,801 and if that is the case he is marking the Domestic around 18,751.

Anyone have labor hours on this one?

These CTM units are pretty cheap, where are they made? Almost too good to be true. Chicom made?

As I said above, figure 6 hours per evap or condenser. That’s about the time I spent when I refitted my 53 with chillers. Obviously I spent a lot more time running the chilled water loop but installing each AH was about 6 hours. I ve also replaced 9 air handlers on the boat i run so far and that’s about what it takes.

So figure 55 hours plus whatever extra work… shouldn’t be more than 60 hours altogether

I installed 3 single-piece units in our 54'. Average cost per unit about $1800, figure about $300 for hose/wire/misc parts. I ran new hoses from existing pumps to each stateroom and wired them to former Crusair junction boxes in generator room. Each install took me about 4-6 hours, and I was definitely not an expert when I started. We did look into replacing the Crusair units (R22) but cost was astronomical in comparison, since there are no new R22 units being made, and current environmental regulation prohibits anything beyond repair/recharge.
