  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
Not Currently A Hatteras Owner
I recently discovered an internet site with standard diesel engine specifications for DD, CATs and Cummins.
It lists the DD6-71 as having 238HP and 285HP for the DD6-71T, there is no TI or TO listed.

Nowhere in the specs of any of the boats listed on the web do I see HP anywhere near these specs.
In all the listings I see on the web, that bother to list the HP, the DD 6-71T?es are listed as having either 390HP and 485HP.

Did any 6-71 turbo generation boats come with these lower HP rated engines, say closer to the 285HP? This would have been a great option, for the original buyer, to get the most life from the engines, hind-sight is 20-20.

Is the HP of a boat's engines listed anywhere on the boat, so you know what the actual HP is?

Pascoe writes that the DDes can be easily de-rated with injector swaps.
Talking to a CAT mechanic, he said de-rating a CAT involves more than changing injectors because the complete engine has been modified. Can the DD6-71TI be de-rated without a total rebuild?

If its on the internet it must be true.

Do you have a specific question on your motors? .

Sure. pull the throttle back.

Question about Detroit Diesel 6-71T Horse Power simplified:

if a 6-71N at 238HP will last 10,000-20,000hrs if you look after it
and if a 6-71T at 485HP will last 2000hrs if your lucky

1. Can you de-rate a 6-71T and get 6-71N Hours?
2. Did any of the production 6-71T?es, installed in a Hatteras, come rated at less than 390HP?

Many different hp ratings over the years. 310 for naturals was common. 390 to 450 was common too. 485 was tops from only one marinizer.

Short answer is no you can't just change injectors and remove turbo's and intercoolers and make a N engine. The big item is the 17:1 compression rating on the T's compared to the 18:1 on N's not to mention a number of items. You can run the turbo engines at hull speed and they will outlast you. Or buy a boat with naturals.

I believe that both Covington and J&T jacked them up to 485. I owned a set of Covington 6-71TIB's.
