  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
Our boat has always had a Slight 2-3" lean (at the water line) to starboard. I have looked at everything. The only thing I am not sure of was the location of the original genset. The new one is just slightly port of center. Everything else is as new. I have moved all the tools to port as well. It appears about 250 pounds will level her .

Do I just put that amount of ballast outboard of the batteries or am I missing something?

Most of them don't sit exactly level at rest in calm water. Mine certainly does not. I'm not sure I'd bother with ballasting her to level her out.

My 34 has always had a "lean" to STB but always runs port slightly down. I found the best way to figure it out was to stop trying to figure it out.

Starboard but when refitting new appliances the boat lost almost 100 pounds on that side.

My boat has a list to port due to all the granite in the galley. I had the same problem with my 46C and added some ballast on the starboard side under a bunk. Boat looked "level" at the transom but it caused a shift in balance fore and aft. You need to determine where the imbalance is inorder to properly fix it, or you can leave it alone and go boating.

If you'll pardon the expression,.. mine leans to Starboard too. Maybe we should take a poll,... wait, that doesn't sound right either. :p

My boat has quite a few lead ingots installed by Hatteras in order to level the boat as it left the factory. This was standard practice. I know of some owners that took the lead out to lighten the boat or otherwise counter balance furniture moves, your previous owner may have done that. If so, just put the lead back in.

I moved lead in and out (mainly in) as needed, but things to check:
- Water/Moisture in the hardtop/flybridge?
- Fuel balanced?
- Dink moved to different location?
- Galley furniture
- TOOLS weigh a LOT. Did you add/remove any tool boxes?
- Have batteries been moved to new locations?
- Water in the bilge (maybe trapped in one section with clogged weep hole)?
- Is there a list/lean fore and aft too?? That can be a good "tell" also.

If it's truly only 250 pounds (you can stand on the port freeboard and it levels out), that's not much. Also, weight shifts up top have a much bigger effect than down low in the bilge. It may take more than 250 of ballast if you're putting it in the bilge - also put it outboard as far as possible.

Scroddy I can always count on you for a giggle or two!!!! My boat will always be leaning Right!!!

A properly placed keg orator will solve that and some other problems.

Scotty my boy, now that's an idea!
