Against better judgment and advice I took my 34c offshore on saturday, Cape Canaveral FL. Seas were reported 4-6, very windy and choppy. Headed into the stuff at 15kts and got beat up, Found Wild Bill on the way out , got a good view of his new bottom job, and got blow away by a 60 that passed us like we were going backwards. I counted only 4 SF's out fishing that day and you guessed it they were all Hatteras.
Roll Call : Catherine Mae 34c, Wild Bill 37c, Jester 46c, and the 60c forget the name but he is from Wild Bills dock.

My crew wanted to stay out all day, left at 6am and pulled into our slip at 630pm, we were the last fools to come in. We only landed one fish, 20+lb Wahoo. Bob(Wild Bill) says that may have been the wining fish of the day.
None of my crew nor I got sick, still cant believe that as I am far from a heavyweight. Needless to say I got my weekly shower that day. Stuff in the Refer crashed and some stuff got tossed in the forward cabin but that is about it.

With my limited experience with bigger seas I now have seen a total Hatteras day.

Where are the pictures?

4-6' seas and 40-50 degrees Farenheit is why Hatteras exist. Normal winter fishing here in Carolina although we do have a lot of days that start off a lot better, but by the time you get back it is pretty ugly. LOL :D

I don't like to fish that bad to get beat up like that and being cold and wet. At that rate you don't have time to have a beer. You don't dare let loose of one hand for very long. Doing stuff like that will make you as old as me or make you think so. You had to be beat at the end of the day. To bad you didn't catch more fish for all the work and time spent. Glad you made it a safe voyage.

I probably am as old as you, but days like that let me recapture my youth. Bring it on, throw more water at me, lets catch some fish. Seas like that are God's way of keeping us humble. By the way, on the following day a 53' Prowler tried to go out. He buried the bow three times before leaving the port. He turned around. He's now in the market for a Hatt. He toured my boat last night. Any 37's for sale? :D

I wish you had gotten a picture of my hull. That surely would have been suitable for framing.

Hey Steve,

Glad to hear you had a good time and survived to tell us about it! :D

I refer to myself as a lightly salted freshwater fisherman as the only Hatteras to date I have fished from is GuzBoy's 67. It certainly doesn't sound like you put yourself or your crew in danger, but I agree that fishing for fun is supposed to be just that. I assume you were not out there because the boat payment is due or you were hungry. If your idea of fun is going boldly when nobody else wants to, Hatts off dude! You guys had fun, nobody came back a pint low, sounds like a good day to me! We have called it quits twice due to rough seas, 10-12 footers on the right coast, and 6-8's on the Gulf. A large green Cuban is a scary sight! :D You know I love you there GuzBoy, but your chum capacity is scary brother!

Most of us have time constraints and have to play the cards we are dealt as to weather, so I wouldn't lecture you about taking a fairly small boat to sea given you own a Hatteras and are not a novice. Your 34 is a fine example of the breed and reflects the pride you take in her. Our friendship aside, it is definitely at the top of the list of Hatts I've been on as to condition. She is indeed a credit to her nameplate. I hope I can join you some day for some fishing and fellowship, hopefully on a better one than you had this time around!

I have never gotten sea sick, even in a boat smaller than yours in much larger seas. Seasickness is not a measure of a man, so I really don't care if I do toss my cookies one day. My primary goal when I head out is to enjoy the company of those who come along, and if I catch a fish, it's only icing on the cake. Me and Carl have a surplus of icing-less cakes these days, donations will be gladly accepted as will waypoints where we can find fish!

Needless to say I got my weekly shower that day. Stuff in the Refer crashed and some stuff got tossed in the forward cabin but that is about it.

I was able to take care of getting wet new top and enclousre keeps me dry for those days.
BUT I hate when I open the refrig and all my BEER falls out onto my feet  Still working on fixing that one

Hey one fish better then NONE.

I had beer accident. had 18pack bottles and gallon of water on top shelf, it bent and came down, no beer damaged however. I had a battery operated CO detector lying in the v bunk all the way forward and it wound up on the floor in pieces. must have looked cool flying throught the air like a flying saucer, also the 2 front drawers in the v bunk came out spilling contents. Guess after 40 years of opperation the detent must be ramped instead of square.

Had a little crowd at the dock when we got back at 630 pm. they said they herd us leave early AM, Started engines at 530am, sort of loud for the live-aboards.

Ate some of my portion of the fish last night and will finish it tonight. heck it was big enought do divide 5 ways.
