Hello All,

I was recently introduced to a different type of fire suppression than what we carry here on the ship.

It is basically an anti fire hand grenade that will knock the shit out of a fire fast and you remain at a safe distance. We bought one so far but will be adding 2-3 more because the ship is 300 ft long and we don't want to have to run too far to grab one. I believe they would work excellent on boats of our size.

Here is how they work; You store the unit in an accessible location in it's carrying case with the trigger installed.
If you have a fire, grab it pull the pin and throw as close as you can to the fire and close off the space if possible and get away for a bit. The device ignites a flare inside once the pin is pulled and it starts discharging in 8 seconds so you have to toss it somewhere as there is no turning back once you pull the trigger. Then you go carefully and check if you need to fight remaining hot spots.

I believe we paid about 900 dollars US for ours.

Smooth sailing,

Interesting idea, but I wouldn't want to open my engine room door with a fire inside.
And that's the only area where I would expect a major fire to begin. Smaller ones perhaps behind an electrical panel perhaps, but I'd probably grab one of the conventional extinguishers first.

Opening the engine room hatch with a fire down there wouldn't be my first choice either I would go for the c02. I had a fishing boat catch fire once from a bad bunk lite and man did that get out of control fast. I am going to purchase one to have in the event that co2 or hand extinguishers fail me. $900 bucks vs jumping in the water or skiff/life raft offshore with my kids is about the last thing I ever want to experience, when I think about how much money I have in fishing gear I would feel guilty if I didn't give my boat and crew all the tools available to save ourselves/boat.

I work in the commercial fishing industry as a Chief Engineer with 80-90 people onboard perhaps I let too much of work/worry overflow into my pleasure boating it's just the way I am I guess...
