Some of ya'lls engines may not blow much smoke, but not the same can be said for the owners--lot's of hot air and smoke blown around by them!

If you have 470# compression obviously the engines are sound. Checking injectors might be in order and go over the tune up real well. One thing that gets overlooked is checking the rocker arms for wear, worn injector rockers will cause smoke. Max wear is .007. I use the dial indicator for setting height, you can get it exact that way. Dave

Jim told me you were using an indicator to set the timing. That does seem like a much more acurate way to do do. Can you post a pic of the set up? Is it something you bought or made?

Jeez - make someone a senior member with all the associated rights and privileges and who knows where it will end? :)

Oh wow, Sr member? I didn't know there was such a thing.

Hey, somebody has to keep it real ;)

Not entirely up on Oil Analysises. Would a series of them give an indication of what is actually causing smoke? ie: fuel, oil, air etc. And are they cheaper than compression checks and boroscope checks?

My wife tells me I could start a fight in a church. But you definetly have me beat!!!

Aparently it is no longer available (acording to snap on website)

I am suprised they don't have them. I see them on e bay fairly often and usually sell for 1/3 of what I paid.

The # comes up as "no longer available for sale" I checked ebay didn't see any if you happen to see it let me know I'd like to get one. Or maybe I could take a look at yours and reverse engineer one of my own?

I think a decent machineist could zip one out. Maybe Krush could whip one out in his spare time. Heck I would like a spare. Maybe for Christmas?

Well I have all the stuff to do it and I could make 2 I just need one to work from. From the photo I'm not understanding how it works? Where does the base sit I'm thinking it's got to sit on the flat of the injector body but I'm not seeing how?

Brian

I'm pretty much a fanatic for clearance measuring, etc but I have to admit that in this case, the height gauge seems accurate enough to me. These are DDs, not Formula 1 engines! :)

But on the other hand, I'd ask if there was any noticeable improvement in performance using the dial indicator as opposed to the height gauge.

The base is used for calibration @ 1.500, the cut out goes around the follower and the bottom is magnetized and sits on top of the injector then the rod sits on the head where the hole for the pin is.

Mike,
If you are really good with the pin you can do an ok job. On the high output engines you want the height right on the specs. I find it easier with the tool and don't need to carry a bunch of pins around. Dave

I meant for Krush to make us a couple, Being the entrepenuer he is he could sell a dozen to the guys on here.

Poor Dave! He just asked a simple question about smoke from DD 8V71TIs and look what happened! Six pages of differing opinions ending (so far) with a discussion about dial indicators! He's probably sorry he ever brought it up!! :)

Ain't it great! Be thankful he did not list it for sale!!!

OK dave now I got it that shouldn't be to hard to make. I always felt the pins where probably not very acurate. There just seems to be to much feel to the process. I generaly put a drop of oil on the injector then adjust for a clean wipe with the height guage.

Get it to me and I got some friends that are really good with ProE, Solidworks, etc. Get it drawn and get some CNC'd. In the economic slow down I'm sure some shops have lots of time available on their machines.
