871N Collectors

I have 1965 8v71n's in my 50" MY. What I believe are referred to as the collectors are the old style. They look like large truck mufflers hanging over the engines. The pipes go down to elbows and flanges bolted to the manifolds. One large outlet goes to the exhaust tubes and out. Got the picture?

I seem to remember someone posted a while back about replacing these with a newer style that removed the risk of dumping seawater into the engine if a failure should occur. I now have a newly developed pin-hole leak on one of the lower elbows (oh, boy!). I want to investigate just tossing the whole setup and having the new style ones made up for both sides.

Anyone have any info or photos on this? I know Mike and Dan have spoken about a great exhaust shop on Long Island that is fairly easily accessible to me.

I would like to try and temporarily patch this so I can take my last few planned cruises, but I don't want to do the "stupid" either, so I'll have to evaluate the extent of the deterioration.

I had to replace one of mine. Had to get a new one rebuilt because they could not weld it back. They tried but it wouldn't seal up.

The company who made them was sold but the current company will still make them for us. I believe the cost was around 5,000. It came to me in perfect cond.

OK, thanks for the comeback. I think I see the writing on the wall. I may be making this trip on an Ocean. The only thing that makes me feel better is that I was one of the captains bringing it up from Jupiter to Ct.

This is the yard i used to do the job. If you call them they can tell you who to call to order yours. I forget the vendor name but they will know it. If for some reason you can't get them i can just let me know your status... if you can try to get a hold of Mark

Just tell him Brian with the "How sweet it is" sent you to him... He'll know where to get the part I'm sure. If not i can call around and find out the vendor from Field Services who did my engine replacement.

If this doesn't get you what you need let me know i can call the owner of Field Services and get the name of the vendor. Just let me know... If i find it in my papers i will post it too... Mark is a good guy is always willing to help.

The place I use for these exhaust parts is Extreme marine power in Stuart , florida 772-486-7968. They build a hard coat insulated exhaust system that make leaks obsolete. The only part that can leak is the water can but it is down hill from the engine so water will not enter the engine. The water can is made of high grade stainless steel and last for many years. The turn around time is the best I have found anywhere in the state of Florida and prices competitive.
