  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
45' CONVERTIBLE-Series II (1984 - 1992)
I have a friend/client thinking about purchasing a 70C and had a few questions about the draft. First, I've run a few of them and overall love the layout and performance of the boat. I wish I could have one for myself. My only concern is the same as my friends, "the potential buyer" and that is how much water the boat needs to float.

1. Does anyone know the ACTUAL Draft of the boat? In 1997 the original specs stated a 5' 4" Draft. Then as the years went on it increased to 5' 7" and if you look at the Brochure listed on this site it states 6' 1". When running the boats for owners/dealers I've been told same thing. No one has ever been able to give me a straight answer.

2. Is the different draft numbers because of Model Years changes, Power and Gear Options, or simply incorrect Specs posted by Hatteras Yachts. As far as Engines the only two options ever offered were CAT 3412E's and MTU 16V2000's

3. If the actual draft is a workable 5'4" I think he will look to buy one but if it's over 6' he can't. So if it's 6' 1" does anyone know if its possible to reduce that draft back near 5' with different gearing, and smaller wheels and struts without effecting performance. This is assuming the draft differences mentioned above are do to driveline and running gear set up and not spec printing errors.

If Hatteras built this same 70C boat and or the 82C/86C/90C with prop pockets and a 5' draft today with the 2600HP MTU 16V2000's I think they would be big sellers. They have the new GT70 but these with the aft deck boats are nice. You could call them a Yacht Fish Series.

Any help on this would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks

Tony.

if you want to know draft of the boat. Get the HIN number off of the transom and call C.D. Piner at Hatteras 252-634-4867 and he can tell you what the draft was when it left the factory.

I'll call him on Monday. Thanks. You wouldn't have any idea why they very in Draft, or atleast why the spec sheets very would you?

Thnaks Again

I'd be curious as to why the difference in draft. The 70 is based on the same hull as the 65. My 65 draws 5'4" according to the spec sheet. later models have the same draft but use prop pockets and larger wheels. Engine options on the 65 are similar in weight until you get to the MTU 16V2000. Those boats have a listed draft of 5'10" (if memory serves me). They are a bit heavier than the Cats and might be using larger shafts. I would think the same would be true for the 70. It has been my understanding that the published specs are for that particular model with the heaviest available options. So if there is a 8K lb difference from one engine option to another or if there was an option for additional fuel, an enclosed bridge etc., the brochure would list the weight and draft of the heavier boat. That's the only explanation I can think of but getting the numbers for each individual hull would help get a base line. A lot of stuff can be added to a 70 to change her weight and draft.

Jack, Yes it's weird. I have an original 1997 Build/Spec sheet from when I worked at Allied Marine before Marine Max took over Hatteras Sales. It shows a 5'4" draft Just like the 65' which it's essentially the same Hull with a few tweaks so I would assume it should be the same. Then in the later years I see brochures listing it at 6' 1" with Broker listings anywhere in between. Like I said I've run a few off them and always assumed 6' just to be safe.

They can vary greatly inprop size. Mine have what seem to be small wheels. I believe mine are 36" 3 blade. I have Radice which have a very large DAR so a smaller diameter wheel is used. Other 65s have wheels in the 42"-46" range but I think the props would still be above the deepest part of the keel.

Most of the 65's I've seen 1987 thru Early 1994 have some keel protection. In 1994 they cut the keel down and I believe at the same time added pockets. If not, the pockets followed soon. But once they cut the keel in 1994 any and all prop protection went out the window. The 1992 "Aquavit" that I managed the refit, had smaller 5 Bladed wheels and the wheels sat even with the keel or possibly even had an inch or two of protection. It's hard to tell sometimes by just looking at them but it was close. It was most recently called "Desporado" and appears to have just been sold again.
