Let's see..... 300,000 miles at 1.5 gal per mile = 450,000 gal of diesel fuel. Even if it were only average of $1 per gallon, that's abolut half a million dollars just in fuel costs.
That's boating. If we all just stayed home, we'd have built up quite a fortune by now. But, hey, that's okay, I'd be insane if I didn't get to go out and burn some diesel with my Hatteras on a regular basis. Therapy would probably cost more than the fuel anyway. I hope someday I can tell people that I spent that much on fuel too.
So let's see 300K miles is = to 12.5 x around the earth. Wow. If one were to average 14mph for this many miles it would take 2.44 years to put that many miles under the hull running 24/7. Wow again. I'm lucky if I average 150 hours/year which I have probably averaged since I was 18 or so. So for the last 24 years, let's see 150hours at 16mph/hour = 2400 miles per year x 24 years = 57600 miles so far. I've got a ways to go...at my current rate I'll be 143 years old when I hit 300K miles at 16mph. I need to do more boating and less reading...
I spoke with the owner a bit more today while they reinstalled the shaft. He has rebuilt the 8V71ti's 5 or 6 times now and has gotten bewteen 2000hrs at the least and 6000hrs at most out of the rebuilds! He said that the longevity is directly proportional to the rpm's used at cruise. In the 70's when the boat was new and fuel was 50 cents/gal, he cruised eveywhere at 2000rpms. That is when he got 2-3 thousand hours out of them. Now he cruises like most of us at displacement speeds and he gets between 5 and 6 thousand hours on the rebuilds. Either the last time or the one before (he couldn't remember) he needed new blocks because there was some electrolysis and the fact that the blocks had over 25,000hrs on them! He said Detroit was no longer making them at that time and had only five (5) blocks left after he bought his two!
