All the work you are doing looks first class. This is going to be a great 53 to have quiet and fast. Did I read you going to paint the hall too?

The guy doing really the work really knows his stuff.

I was going to paint the hull but it s going have to wait. Between the hurricane damage and the surprises found during the repower, my wallet needs to take a break :). Going to finish the mechanical and interior first and do the paint in a few months

i'm running 27x31 props on my repowered (450HP john deeres) 58 yf they are rated at 2000 rpm's.. i'm looking for a set now. closest i have found local is 27x33

Ah...the joy of 1-piece shafts...

It's looking great!

For a moment we worried we d have to lift the boat to get shafts in. The guys had measured and it was as close as predicted but they slid right in. All 20 feet of them at about $180 a foot :)

I know a guy who had to dig two holes...the boat hadn't been blocked quite high enough.:p

Bottom almost done in these pics and finished by now

Good for you. We ran out of good weather and I still working on priming and painting new quarterfenders. Sometimes I do wish I did my boating in FL.. but I might feel differently in August.

Pascal,
Did you ever consider going to a deeper reduction gear? I only ask because you had to replace shafts and props anyway. I know most new boats are going with deeper reduction since they are more efficient and quieter. I just wondered if you looked into it and what the rational was to stay with the 2:1

Someday, I may repower as well so any info I can gather from those who have already been through this helps.

I wanted to keep the struts (all 4 of them)... the prop shop and the cummins dealer figured that 2" aquamet 22 woudl work with an adequate safety factor

I also think that larger shafts would have been an issue with the shaft tubes

Well you would have had to go with thinwall bearings, possibly, to get them in there. And I don't think thinwall bearings are as durable.

I know a guy who went with 3:1 on his 53MY, 2 1/2" shafts but had all new struts made. He really likes the way it performs and mostly the decrease in vibration and sound levels. I just wondered if Pascal had considered it and what the rationale was. I would think the cost/benefit would we difficult to ascertain.

Hi Pascal

I’ve been thoroughly enjoying your posts. And have been looking at your nice new props in situ.

Perhaps I need a complete lesson, but I always thought starboard side props were clockwise and port side props were anticlockwise. I’ve just viewed my own boat’s prop photos and they are opposite to yours.

yes normally they turn outboard, what is up with that ??

I noticed after I took the pictures but didn't get a chance to talk to the guys, they were at the shop making brackets for the throttle cables. Indeed they should the the other way. In theory you get a little more stern lift with outward turning wheels (at the top) Also with outward setup the rudders should be offset outboard, and they are.

Hoping to splash Monday

You could set the boat up with a 2:1 gear portside, and a 3:1 gear stbd, and then go in circles first to the right, then the left, and calculate mileage running one engine etc. You'd have to REALLY want this information, since you'd still have to change to the better combination once you were done with said test...

I'll see myself out, thanks...

I didn't have to ask... when I got there this morning they had already swap the wheels. The mechanic was pissed his guy had put them on wrong ...

be careful what you trust them with if they get the props wrong
