  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
My 1980 53 my has a queen berth I had seen on yacht world that there is a same year with a king berth. My question is did Hatt do that or was it converted. It looks like the water tank was relocated and the headboard was pushed farther aft. I would think it was relocated under the bed. It also looks like the drawers are also push back a bit to accommodate the wider mattress I think I would like to do this to mine it doesn't seam like it would be that difficult.

I can't imagine fitting a king in a 53, ther wont be any space left on each side

X2 buy a bigger boat if you need a king. I was on a 63 footer yesterday. Now that boat has a huge master suite with a king.

I converted mine to a king, all I had to do was cut down the end tables a little and put on a new plywood base, the length was not a factor and there is still plenty of room on each side, the only place that got a little tight is the corner where the aft head is you have to squeeze through there sideways but that for us is a small compromise to get a nice comfortable king bed. Sorry forgot one thing, the water tank was not moved, John

I have seen on yacht world that there is a difference in the layout In regards to post 1980 53s layout I've been on one in port Washington "Enuff". And was surprised my how much room there was between the foot of the bed and the closet I think the bed was up against the stern. And his cabinet layout was completely different. That got me thinking.

You might also consider something like the series I 48MY. These have 'queens' and they have the length of a queen, and a queen width at the head, but a slight taper at the foot to allow decent clearance to the wall of the master head. We don't even notice that taper. In fact prefer this bed to the full king at home. It would require a custom mattress however.

I just looked at the photos of your boat online. Your master stateroom layout is not standard. That settee in the stbd corner aft is not typical. The standard queen berth is centerline which would have it centered between the two aft ports in the transom. It would appear that yours is set to port of center to accommodate that settee.

Checked sizes, queen is 60 X 80 inches regular King is. 76 X 80 inches California King is 72 X 84 inches, so to go to a std. King you only have to add 8 inches to each side, the length stays the same, John

Eric I hate the Seat and the vanity. So I plan on redoing the cabinets anyway. the storage under the bed is great but it's hard to access. I'm sure I can design and build a better layout that will fit my needs and have more storage then I currently have.

Put a sliding door on the port side of the storage area under the queen mattress. It makes access pretty easy, and, if you make it a decent size, you can actually crawl in there if needed without messing with the mattress. The ability to crawl in will depend, of course, on the door size as well as YOUR size. I keep a lot of stuff under there and the sliding door converts the space from being not of much practical use to quite handy.

Don't forget to add the mirrors on the ceiling

PO put multiple drawers in under our bed, very nice and easy to use, John

Sliding doors and drawers are great ideas to maximize the useable space. Being able to crawl into the space without moving the mattress would be awesome.

Wasn't there a post about a pole in the stateroom?
