50 C with 3408 cats?

Goofing around I just saw a listing for a 1993 with the 3408s. Didn't know they were avail with them. Anyone have any idea how they suit the boat...I imagine ok as they are rated at 775 or 800' and should be close to the 1271 boats. Like all thE big mechanicals, I think the rating was a big leap from its less than 500 up commercial/continuous rating. Anyone know how they hold up?

That is the best package in that boat. The ER is serviceable and they outperform the 12V71's by a long shot. 25-26kt cruise and 30kt WOT. I didn't think the 3406's were available in that boat until the late 90's. It may be a repower. The 3406 is one of the best engines Cat built. 10K hours before a top end overhaul is normal. That's the same block that is now the 1100HP C18 and still a great engine. That boat also came with 3412 Cats but there were hull problems with them. Too much speed and HP for the hull.

This one is at my marina and although I haven't been on her, those that have say she's a 10.

Hey jack, we have been in touch about the 3406 vs the 1271, but this is the 18 liter v8 3408. It was new to me when I saw the listing. Boat is a 1993 in San Diego on yw. Curious.
 
Sorry Paul, I misread the post. I don't think I've ever seen a 3408 in a recreational boat. I doubt it was an original package unless it was custom ordered. Price seems pretty high, particularly for an odd ball package. You can buy a similar vintage 54C with 3412's for the same money. Look at the link I posted. Word is he is ready to deal. Might end up being the same money even with the shipping and you would get a newer boat with the updated styling.
 
there were one 50C Hull 523 that was built in 1993 that had 3408's in it Hatteras did not use that engine in a 50C again until 1997 there were two more built with 3408's all had 776 SHP Cat C18 is a great engine for the boat. The Cat 3412 were good engine for the boat and it was not that the engine was over power for the boat there were a mistake in the lay up in the hull. I think Hatteras recalled all the hulls that had more than a 1000 SHP and corrected them.

Interesting. Curious why Hatt used the 3408 for a few and then went with the 3406 as the standard package. I would think the 3408 would be tight in that ER. The 3406 gives you slightly more HP in a smaller package. I've never heard of any hull issues with the MTU or 12V92 50C's. I recall the major issues being with the 3412 boats which weren't available in the early 50C's. Was Hatteras having problems with those earlier hull too? I also heard the problem was corrected but again that was with the first of the 3412 boats. How can you tell if a hull has been modified? I've always liked that boat as she offers a lot for her size.

The mains look big in the ER pic, and it is probably a bit tight. Any idea on how the 3408 holds up at that rating? The listing doesn't show the hours or any major mechanical history, and I can't really find any decent info on the 3408 at that rating on boatdiesel or elsewhere.
