48 MY Entertainment Center Finished

I finally finished the new entertainment center in Chateau de Mer and thought I'd share the result. The design idea and all sorts of help came from Walt P , thanks again Walt.

This aft salon wall on the 48 MY series I is virtually a blank wall and looks 'plain'. Top inboard cabinet usually houses the TV. The new cabinetry provides wine storage on the lower outboard side, a dissapearing TV with electric lift on the inboard side and the real 'entertainment center' above. The cabinet is only 8" deep so doesn't block access to the generator hatch.

This is about the last of the changes we plan to make, except possibly converting a couple of drawers in the mid cabin into a small laptop work station. The Empress had a nice design for that and if I can work in a printer, I'll consider it for a fall job. For now, let the boating begin.

This mechanism is from 'Lift-it' on the west coast. Sales man was Darryl, 877-543-8698. Retail price is very high but they will discount to cabinet makers. It is fully remote with RF controls and has redundant wired controls as well and provision for IR controls too. We did have one glitch within the first few days of the installation, but they were very responsive. It looks like a rugged design.

There is another company on the west coast that is just going into production on a competitive product. They sell components too, but their price for a complete unit is a whole lot cheaper than Lift-it's. I would have been the first customer, and delivery date was uncertain, so opted for 'Lift-it.

Here is another idea you can add on to your bar area.

Get a piece of 1/2 inch plexi or lexan and cut to size as a shelf to fit in the drink section.

cut holes in this shelf to fit the various sized bottles. Mount a cleat about 2/1/2 inches from the bottom on either side of the cabinet interior and screw this bottle holder to it.

Your bottles will not fall over. ( a broken bottle is a waste )

You can also dress it up with a mirror on the interior on the back side of that booze cabinet.


By the way, It looks the color of the new and old is a good match. Nice job !

Chris, the paneling is 1/2" afromosia surfaced marine plywood from a company in NC who's name escapes me. The grain is quite different and that led to a difficult job getting a color match. The metamorism problem still exists, but I actually used a ridiculosly complex finishing process based on trial and error. Started with thin coat of Watco teak oil to seal, then alternatly applied different stains from Woodcrafters. They were shades of cherry. Finally finished with a couple more coats on Watco. I still need to make it a bit more brown, but that's easy with these stains.

Paul, I like the mirror idea. Thanks. For the base, I'll be making a shallow drawer with full extension sides etc. I've used the holes in the sheet idea before and the space between the holes took up too much space, so we went to the expandable sleeves.

And matching new face wood to old is always going to be a challenge. The new stuff, will turn in the sun. In fact it will turn dark sitting in a box for a year.
