Two guys just took it out for a short ride. Hopefully it was to see if they fixed the overheating issue.

just wondering but what is a 72 45 worth these days?

Dunno about the 45C, last weekend I met a couple guys that just bought a 1979 43C that was very decent. Had a tower etc. They paid 50K for it!!!

there is a 46 in boat trader for 65K and a 52 on craigs list for 119 that I know is nice. The 45 is a great boat but the 46 bridge is so much bigger and the boat is a lot dryer.

Hey Jimmie,

I had an overheat issue on my 8/71 naturals, This past winter I took my heat exchangers out and had them dipped, ( a fairly simple process ) and now can run at WOT and never get above 180.

As for the 2200rpms the govenor could be set there, you don't want to run for very long above 2100 anyway from a longevity standpoint.

As many have said before, DD's have a pretty marginal cooling system so if it's not clean heating problems are always an issue. Since you didn't mention black smoking, sound like the wheels were ok. If she's been sitting for two years its probably a combination of things, but nothing that would be a deal killer assuming the engines are ok.

This might mean that a 1985 45C -- with tower -- that is at least "very decent" is a good deal for say -- 80ish? (have not made my offer yet).

YOU GUYS NEED TO REMEMBER THERE IS A LOT MORE TO THESE OLD BOATS THAN ENGINES YOU CAN REBUILD THE ENGINES FOR ABOUT 20000 TO 30000.THERE IS AC GENERATORS SHAFTS STRUTS STEARING FIRE EXTENGWISHERS SHALL I KEEP ON ANY ONE OR AT LEAST ANY TWO CAN REACH A ENGINE REBUILD.. SO BUY ONE AT 80 OR SO AND WARE A CHASETY BELT CAUSE THE REST IS COMMING IN TIME UNLESS YOU USE IT FOR A CONDO.. ALL YOU GUYS WILL AGREE I AM SURE. FOR EXAMPLE I JUST PUT NEW CUTLESS BEARINGS AND NEW SHAFTS AND DRIPLESS STUFFING BOXES I PAID THE BILL FRIDAY $15,678 YES THE BOTTOM WAS PAINTED ALSO .. True but that can happen even with a newer boat unless your made of $ or dont care the days of pulling into a yard throwing them the keys and say just fix it are over. the buyer needs to be knolegable or have a captain who is, not to get raped by yard bills. but if you can buy one of these boats right the money is there to replace the stuff that needs it. Dont forget also Hatteras builds a quality boat and most of the systems and components are of top quality that can be rebuilt rather than replaced. I still have a Sub zero fridge that is 43 years old and when I got a beer out 2 hrs ago was at
38*Heck Ive still got my original onans.
Like everything else today you have to be a smart consumer

I agree with Tim here. You may buy a decent 45C for 80K but you won't get one like his. If you get an 80K 45C you can bet you'll be putting money into her sometime soon. I think a boat like Tim's 45C would be a better deal than a decent 45C for 100K. The cheaper boats are fine if you don't mind fixing things yourself and maybe not upgrading systems and cosmetics. You'll be saving some cash as long as you don't plan on doing everything later. You couldn't refit one of these boats for what they are selling for which is why the cheap ones really aren't always a good deal. Last year there was an '85 45C on the market that could have been bought for 25-30K. A few members here looked at her and all agreed she would cost more to refit than she would ever be worth. Those deals are fine if you truly want to redo one your way but understand that you will never see most of your investment back.

There is a huge difference in values of the 43C compared to the 45C and the 43C may be right for you. The smaller cockpit make the 43C a tougher sell but if you aren't doing any serious fishing a 43C could be the right choice for you. Keep in mind that the 45C is the same boat but with a larger cockpit and engines.

My wife will likely see Tim's boat within a few hours in fact. Do I think that we'll probably spend what Tim's would cost within a year or so even if we get one for half of that now? Maybe.

Will you get a return on that investment dollar for dollar? No, and Tim's boat is great example of that. There's a 46 Bertram with 300K in upfits a few years ago selling for 185 in our area too. Many other examples of boats selling for about half of the upfit costs of the last five years, let alone whatever they paid for the vessel.

Our business connections in the boat yard world, diesel mechanic world and in the restoration world are very good, and we should be able to plod along with that at a slower pace and come in way under retail for those upfits. We don't fish the boat as hard as Tim and some of his fabulous work would be overkill for us -- at least now.

No doubt it's fabulous work, and worth more than he's asking. Not sure it's the right boat for us. Not sure it isn't either. That's why we're looking at it.

Thanks for info - opinions -- and keep it coming.

Update: wife just spent few minutes on Tim's boat. WOW was her reaction. She sent me some pics. Awesome indeed. Very thorough. Obviously a love boat, especially for one that gets fished pretty hard at times.

Very masculine interior, but not in a guys only fishing club way, more in a lodge or club type way. She is impressed, and she's talented designer herself.

Jimmy, any updates?

The owner did a reduction in price to take it as-is engine wise. My concern is what happens to that engine long term. If the overheating does not get worse it would be a good deal. If it deteriorates its a disaster. I am still talking to mechanics in an attempt to better understand the possibilities. Something needs to happen soon as this oil thing may prevent me from bringing it to N.O.

Jimmy

keep the boat in ala. and your apartment in no,la. we can have fun partying together. bigbill

If a good mechanic has not been able to fix the problem chances are it will get worse.

one thing the mechanics miss a lotof times is the coolant concentration my dad got overzelous one year when we had the 34 and it took all summer before we figuered it out.

Don't be muscled into buying the boat. The temps you saw were high enough to do damage and that could cost more than what you are paying for the boat. If the deal seems good to you, only proceed after a complete engine survey. The overheat issues should be easy enough to fix but you need to determine if any damage has been done. If you have a cracked head or worse a cracked block, then your in for some serious cash. How much did they knock off for you to proceed? If its a lot I would suspect they know there are expensive issues.

few and far between

Good mechanics are easy to find if you are willing to pay them fairly. I have access to a few in my area that are worth their rate.

And from boat owners I have talked to, that "pay them fairly" rate is going down due to the economy. I've heard of MOH's going for half what they did a couple years ago -- and heard of a trawler only mechanic now open to working on convertibles or anything else. These stories range from NC to New Jersey.
