surveyors

I would reccomend Rhoades in Ft Lauderdale very through and fair. I would not use Pickersgil.

Detroit Engine Surveyor

A good Engine Surveyor that is very knowledgeable on 6V92's and 8V92's is Gary Gillespe @ Enginesurveyor.com.
Did mine about 18 months and likewise I had no surprises.
He's also the kind of guy you can call from time to time for advice and counsel, always seems happy to answer a few questions. thx.

short story forget all the bs their is no comparison
between these two boats. the 45 hat wins.you are not comparing apples to apples.

BOLO 45 Hatt

After careful consideration, it's going to be a 45 Hatt. Now it's just a matter of finding "the one". I am in the Miami area and one of the common things I keep running into is 1985ish clean hull that has rebuilt engines with grossly dissimilar hours. The rebuilds always seem like they are done by some individual mechanic who is "great" and a "wizard" with Detroits etc... but from reading some of the threads, this sounds like thin ice. So I guess I need to just keep looking with the hopes that I will find one with the right documentation on the engines.

Yep

One rebuild is instant-suspicion time. After all, if one blew up, isn't the other shortly to follow?

The exception is a low-time rebuild that blew up and was done AGAIN due to something that was done WRONG the first time.

But grossly dissimilar hours usually means the first engine got to where it HAD to be done, the other is still running ok, so you should budget for the second into the price.

That's cool IF you get the right number. If. And if the rebuild is "Joe and Jack's Cylinder Kit Special" type, then you have to discount it entirely in your offer - which means whacking off $15-20k on your offering price, PLUS whatever else you find.

That usually means a blown deal, because the guys who do this major one SPECIFICALLY to sell the boat - because one engine failed survey previously or it blew up bigtime during a previous trip. Of course if one blew but both were abused, the second is right behind it.....

South Florida is a great place to shop; I bought my boat there - but you have to be smart about it. The good news is that there's a good selection. The bad news is that there are so many damn alligators in the swamp that you need chainmail to avoid getting bit in half by them! :D

Happy Turkey Day, and if anyone wants to chat with me, feel free - always willing to talk with someone that's looking at these boats. I know mine inside and out, where all the trouble spots are, where the good parts are, and what to look for.

Dinghy on deck

Solanderi, I have a 10.5ft. RIB center console w/25hp which weighs abt 500lbs on the the bow of my 45Hatt. Leaves a ton of room up there and have not experienced any problems. We did fill all deck penetrations with epoxy to minimize any water infiltration issues. The dinghy was on our old boat (41 Egg Harbor) for a couple of years and we had no problems and the Hatt is of more sturdy construction than the Egg.(in my opinion) We had a 35 Bertram some years ago and it was a very good boat but would roll a lot and my wife was not too happy with it,she loves the Hatt though. Good luck in your search.

Hat 45C

I just purchased a 45C 1987 and I was reading many of the comments within the forum. I must admit that I learned more reading these comments in a few hours then in the 7 months it took me to find a boat. I just got through reading your topic on 6V92 and their maintanence wow one thing is certain I will address these points . My vessel is in the Lighthouse point area in Fl. Any recommendations on a diesel mech I could use on a steady basis. Thanks Again Tom.
