Bob,

I am listening now but it's almost midnight and we just got home a little while ago. Thanks for yielding your title of "cheapest" to me, I will wear it with the proper honor. On a serious note however is that as you know I am always looking for new ways to do something that is either cheaper or better or both. As nice as EZ2CY is, I think it is unrealistically priced and obviously they charge what they do because they can. As we recently discussed, I get about 5 or 6 years out of a standard stamoid and isenglass enclosure before it starts to show it's age. Since we are both in our mid 70's, I figure that a new complete bridge enclosure will be good for another 5 or 6 years at which time I will be 80 and possibly finished with boating. If health holds out, I would like to make 85 so that makes two enclosure replacements at about $6,000 each = $12,000. Not really bad when I consider that my original plan of a hardtop and total hard enclosure will cost several times that amount and will probably not add a dime to the resale value of one of our boats. I think Vincente's research was well spent and although it probably won't work out as we would like, I (being cheap) am glad that someone else spent the coins to do the experimenting. Bob as our resident PhD Chemist who spent a career in plastics, you are in a good position to come up with something that the average HOFer with a little talent can accomplish on his/her own. We'll talk...

Walt,

Go for the rag enclosure. I did a Sunbrella and heavy vinyl enclosure on my 41' trawler in 1990 and it was still in place in 2006 when I sold it. It was never taken down in all that time and spent six winters in south Florida.

Some advice:
1,Use the best thread. Gore Tenara! It does not deteriorate. The better fabricaters are familiar with it. If a fabricator refuses, find another.
2,Use the heaviest Sunbrella grade.
3,Use a true UV resistant zipper. The best is made in Europe by Riri!!! Second best is sold by Lenzip out of Chicago. Riri stopped selling in the USA but you might be able to buy on line and ship it here. YKK has the lions share of the marine zippers here. They were not UV stable prior to 2001 when they changed acetal grades, but changed again a year or so later and I do not know what they are using now. I personally would do what it takes to get Riri. They are only 1$ per zipper more.
4,Make the center panel on the bridge out of polycarbonate (Makrolon) and it will not distort vision when running with the panel closed. If you make the side panels to pin up (vice roll up) they will stay nice a long time.
5, Have the fabricator make flaps to cover the zippers. Both sides is best, but just the outside is very helpful.

I agree you guys saw mine enclosure this summer well that was year # 10 and it has many more year to go.
I am hoping at least 5 more.

I made the mistake of not using the gore tex thread and after 5 year it was coming apart so I bought my own roll and had the canvas guy restitch the hole thing all good now!
Big thing is clean the plastic a few time's per year last spring I used finish-it and polished all the windows.

I know mine will last for many years as I removed it long ago and see no need to put it back up in Florida. The 5 days a year the weather is not going to be cooperative for running up there are days I will not run. The rest of the time the greenhouse effect is too much and I have to open it up anyway or it will be 120 degrees.

If I do put anything back it will probably be screened with zip in and out panels for keeping the bugs at bay but then again I'm in no rush.

By the way if I was in the north I would think differently.
