  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
52' CONVERTIBLE (1983 - 1990)
My 52C has what i believe to be its original 32v charger "Lewco silicon diode". The prior owner switched to 8 volt trojan t-875 golf cart style batteries and had the two banks relocated to the boats center line/walkway between engines for ease of service. Original location would be very difficult for me to get too.

Recently ,I had a low battery alarm when turning the key on to fire the engine, it started fine though. Apparently the charger breaker was in the off position, not sure why but it is next to ac breaker and ac guy had just did work on the system and may have tripped it on accident. I didn't have a working gauge inside the cabin so we installed them. I was only at 32.6 and 32.4 with the charger off. I recharged at the number 2 setting for 24 hours. Charge was showing 34.4 and 34.2, I turned the charger off and let the batteries set for an hour. They started dropping immediately with no known load on them. After 1/2 day I was almost back to where I started.

I went down and checked each battery; bank 1 was 8.4 8.4 7.9 7.8 =32.5 bank 2 was 8.4 8.4 7.95 7.9 = 32.65. Seems weird to me that batteries 3&4 in both banks aren't charging up. Batteries are almost 4 years old and full of water. I only use one bank for starting and house bank only powers a few lights inside the boat (very little use) and i do not have an inverter.

I cleaned the cables and upped the charge to position 3 and charge went up to 35.5 in both banks but again fell all the way back down after the charger was switched off. Before I start replacing 8 batteries and probably the charger ($2500) what else should i check for? I will post pics a little later, thanks.

Lewco is gone if memory serves.

The fact that the batteries are showing variance brings up questions. Indoor at the position in the chain. The connections and the age of them.

4 years on a set is probably not unrealistic. They're not rolls batteries and the replacement of the batteries and a charger for one with more modern capabilities would probably be smart.

Try doing a full charge then isolate each battery, a bad battery will drain a good one.

Get rid of the Lewco battery cooker and put in a newer 3 step charger, you will be much happier.

I’m getting ready to replace my original to the boat charger. Staying with a 32 volt charger what are our options?

I’m replacing mine this season as well and I’m torn between analytical systems and sterling.

How many amp charger do i need? We are on dock power 95% of the time, no inverter and when we are underway the alternators put out some good voltage. Additionally 1 of the 2 genny's is running as well. The sterling is a little more than half the cost of analytic and for an $100 extra you can get a remote display. Anyone running this system?

10% of the amp hours of the bank. At least if not a bit more. For example 2 x 8D battery's are about 440 AH so a 50 amp charger is good.

Analytic Systems still makes a 32v smart charger.

Ordered one. Just over 1 boat unit. 30A is not a whole lot, then again I shouldn't need more.

There is an option for a digital readout which is nice. It tells battery voltage and amps of charge in each of the two banks.

Is that a plug in?

Its built into the face of the charger.

The one in this link shows the digital readout but its optional. The best way to order these is to call Analytic directly.

We have the same year 53’. This is the 32 volt charger I put in 6 months ago. Very happy with it.

I have the sterling 32v on my bench at home waiting for me to install it. I just slipped my boat today so maybe will get to it in the next week or so. I now have 8 new 8V batteries so I’m good for a while.

Any updates?

Yes, the unit with Ammeter has arrived and is sitting in the "receiving department". Went to the boat to work on back deck cabinets and promptly forgot it. Which is too bad because when I got to the boat the Sputnik was clicking on/off about every half second. I switched it to manual. It's showing a low (5A) charge but I trust the thing as far as I can throw it, and I suspect it's pretty heavy. I will be back this week to install the new one and will document same.
