Me too. When I first started doing deliveries in the lmid to late 1990's we would stop in Coinjock and get fuel for +/- .70 cents and I thought that was good.
Who do wee need to talk to to get fuel back below aa dollar. If that happened the "small boat" marine industry would take off. I don't thing guys buying 5 to 10 million dollar boats are as concerened about fuel burn and cost as much as we are but to the working man it would be huge. So many people/families I know that had Ski boats, CC boats or 30 to 45 ft express boats or convertibles that would use them on the weekends got out. It had nothing to do with losing the love of boating but more to do with the affordability of running the boat.

On the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh when I was kid you could only ski or tube early in the morning or on weekdays because of boat traffic. Now your lucky to see any boats just running around. Fuel prices killed the small guy.

Have you ever wondered what would happen to the US economy if diesel was stable and about $1.50 a gallon? All goods are "touched" by diesel via freight costs and many of our transportation costs would also drop as well. Automakers would be scrambling to shift to clean diesel models and a huge surge in new car sales would ensue. Used diesel vehicles would also increase in value. All diesel watercraft including everyones boat on this forum would have significant increases in value. Airline pricing would drop. Food costs which affect us all would start dropping as well. As long as the companies involved played by established free market principles, $1.50 a gallon diesel would be an across the board mega shot in the arm of the US economy. Unfortunately, the only way this could happen realistically is by government intervention either by price controls or some sort of subsidies. It would also have to have the cooperation of the richest and most powerful corporations on the planet....never mind.

As soon as we started to increase its use the tree huggers would make diesel harder to process, less efficient and therefore less viable. They see no need for trucks. They think we should use locally grown food. They see no need for boats as our relaxation is contrary to their stewardship of the environment. They also don't need air travel as its wasteful.

I'd love to see diesel prices drop but everything points to the price being held high by over regulation.

In 70 when my dad put the Cats in the 34 he put a tank in at the house and we were paying .17/gal we figured out our first canyon trip cost $29 in fuel Gas at the time was almost double @ .35/gal. It wasn't till the 1978-80 time frame when Olds came out with the 5.7 diesel that someone figured out #2 fuel oil and diesel users were a captive audience and had no alternative but to pay the price. Fuel spiked during the 91 gulf war then dropped like a rock until 911.Still I have a fuel slip on the boat from 2000 where I paid .47/gal + tax.
