Well, the 1st day, from Miami to marathon was uneventful. We ran Hawks Channel, and the boat didn't miss a beat. 12 hours thinning, and 0 oil usage! Tommorow to Sanabelle. Autopilot and GPS make it too easy!
What's next is that the boat creates its own fuel, so he leaves with empty tanks and arrives with full ones. Plus he gets to sell the extra along the way. Nice.
Yes, remember, the floats on the traps are not all colored, some are black and hide behind the waves, be amazing if you don't grab one at least, constant attention to the autopilot off sw. or override is critical...
Great to hear all is going well. The traps are everywhere and you do need to keep a close watch for them. There were a lot when we came through there last year but not as bad as I was anticipating. By now I'm sure you're through them. I use very little oil on my 12V92's too. If I remember correctly, I used about 1-1.5 gallons per engine last year on a 1000 NM trip. I think you'll have less oil consumption running slow as long as you are not overfilled. Just make sure the oil isn't being diluted with fuel. One of the first signs of this is little to no oil consumption. Not trying to scare you just make sure the oil doesn't smell like fuel. Keep us posted and have a safe enjoyable trip.
Wheeee...the POTnotices were dead on....I felt like a sub in a mine field, they were EVERYWHERE...I need a new dodge button on the autopilot! I haven't checked the oil yet today, but it's like a piston airplane...they all use some oil... but no detectable oil use yeaterday.as for boats making fuel...I think Obama is going to mandate that by executive order, so I'll leave it to him!
