My quest for the deal on used diesels continues......Gave up on the 3208's cuz I just don't think they will fit. Just found a pair of 1995 Cummins 6BT's at 210hp w/only 600 hours. Can they be realistically be pumped up to 330 HP? Or is that an expensive road to not even head down?
Thanks

Turbo and fuel pump would need to be adjusted or changed. Not sure on heads and internals. It's something you need to run the serial numbers on to see what's inside.

It's all more in the cooling than just pumping up the power. Then exhaust size on the engine itself might need to be larger as well. I recommend a refinance if possible to buy some reman (which are new) 330's and get a professional install done right. I struggled with the same dilemma years ago and in the end I am glad I did it right (plenty of years of trouble free operation) and now that I am buying parts to replace worn out stuff I am so glad Mastry did not take me up on my offer for some 315's they had.

I looked at Perkins, Peninsular, Detroit 8.2's, etc. If your going to keep it pony up for the good stuff and spread it out over some years. It will be cheaper in the long run.

Best of luck on this.

If I remember correctly, those engines don't have intercoolers either. Raw water pumps are smaller. You would need to change the injection pump or settings in pump, possibly the nozzles, add an intercooler and fuel cooler, different turbo, different raw water pump, and then maybe a heat exchanger. I can't remember if the heat exchangers were different on the two engines.

Also if you check the torque numbers on the 210's they will most likely push the boat better than gas with much better fuel economy. but then again still same cost on installing as you still need shafts (plus cutlass), props, exhaust, fuel lines, engine mounts, etc.

I think there are few if any common parts between the 210 and 330. And don't listen to the Dodge guys who say they gained 200 HP by changing the injectors and turning up the fuel. That only works for a quick blast down the dragstrip.

In short, not practically or economically feasible.

I vaguely remember the cam shaft being changed when they started building them over 300hp. Maybe starting with the 315hp? I'd tend to think the cost to update and increase the HP that much would be more than buying a pair of 370hp remans.

The 3160's Hatt put in the 36 were 210 and the 36's I fished on ran decent #'s and burned little fuel.

Best would be to do as Scott suggested, get the serial numbers and contact Cummins.

Its already been asked and the answer is NO .

And that was for making a 270 into a 330 so 210 No way.

I'm throwing in the towel......
