Any idea what transmissions? I assumed Allison’s, but being back at the house now, I’m thinking twindisk….

And more importantly, after waking her from a 6 year layup ( I just bought her), she started right up, but starboard has no interest in forward or reverse engagement

Strike that…looks like a twin disc 514.

The next question….. thought on why no forward or reverse. Yes it has fluid.

Ok....so back to the boat today, and I think I spoke too soon. Looking online, I'm thinking it had a twinDisc 509? Info badge is beyond illegible, even with some cleaning. I cant find too much information on the 509.

Port pressure at idle is maybe 60.....starboard maybe 30....but thats old helm gauges talking. port pressue jumps up...starboard does nothing.

According to the lift guy, it came in just fine, when hauled 6 years ago. No forward or reverse makes me think pressure problem, unless both clutches shit the bed while sleeping 6 years......pumps dont go bad from sitting...

I hoping crude in the selector valve...or the pressure regulator (which is also in the selector)

Masters of the twindisc please chime in

I am no twin disc master, however, I just watched a youtube video where the guy suddenly had this problem and he cleaned up the selector valve, I think, and then it worked again.

Send a pic of the clutch.
Remember, TD clutches uses the same CF2 oil as your engines. Level checked at idle after cycling thru F, R, N a few times.

TD/MG 514 has a builtin oil filter cartridge and then a wire mesh.
TD/MG 506 just a mesh and maybe a remote oil filter. I would venture you have the TD/MG 506. Near bomb proof clutch.

When in doubt, if oil level is up correctly, Next error; control cable connects.

She looks more like the pics of a 509. The screen housing cover is parallel to the flywheel. Fron what I read, its justa strainer in there, not a filter. and the hose goes from there to the pump.

I assume by control cable connects, you mean the shift cables from the helm? The are good, and seem to throw the arm all the way in both directions Fluid looks good in neutral...i cant cycle it through any gears...it leterally makes zero difference when shifted...no pressure change, no sound, nothing. i even gingerly increased Rpm once forward was selected, in case it was the pump struggling to make pressure.

Need a pressure gauge on the pump. I suspect bad O rings in the selector valve.

What’s the pump pressure?

What’s the pump pressure?
In neutral and no pack pressure, your looking for around 50PSI, this proves that the pump is flowing. When engaged, 250psi+ should be seen.
I'm wondering, does the oil pump get warm when idling after a minute or two??
Maybe just priming the pump could help. If it has been in storage a while, could be dry. Gear/star pumps don't move air very well. And may have an issue pulling cold oil up.

It was showing maybe 30psi at idle in neutral. I’ll check for oil filters in the line to pump.

i took a look at the parts diagram for the selector valve, and didn’t see any o-rings. I still think it’s worth taking apart and cleaning,,,,best source for gaskets?

If Florida, I use ADR Power Systems.
Travis at the St Pete shop.

Not sure who in N.C.

Pulled the line from the cooler, and tried to dump some oil in...hardly took any. So I know there is atleast oil to the output sode of the pump.

Gave the control valve some stout whacks with a hammer....

All good for know. Shifting in and out of forward & reverse. I had tapped it before, but this more spirited.

Thanks to all for the advise

Ah, the psych of the BFH.
Micro adjustments of the finest detail....

Now, what pressures are you getting in neutral and engaged?
May take a while for the pressure to peak when engaged for the first couple of times.

Helm Gauge (which I dont trust) still shows about 40 at idle in neutral. However, now it shoots up when engaged. I havent left it in gear long, since I'm tied along the dock, working out other demons....

This sounds like good news here. Let us know the results when you cut loose from the dock.
